Battery Question for 1973 TS185

Post by djaysmak »

Hi Gang--

I'm not too familiar with electronics/batteries, so my question is a basic one...

Can I use any conventional battery that has similar specs to the recommended battery and fits in the battery tray?

Looking at this sealed lead acid battery that has similar specs to the recommended Yuasa 6N4-2A-4. Seems to be close enough to give it a shot, but does anyone have a reason why I shouldn't use it? Main reason for looking for alternatives is 1) cost, generic SLA is less than half the price of Yuasa and I need 2 batteries; 2) generic SLA is sealed, therefore less maintenance.

One noted difference is amps, Yuasa is 4.0A and generic SLA is 4.5A - how much does this matter and what differences will I see?

This will be used in a 1973 TS185.

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Your TS185 uses the battery to control the voltage.
Depending on the year, it may have an additional voltage regulator to stop the voltage from going to high.

On the 12V bikes, such the T250, that use the battery to control the voltage, its normal for voltage at high rpm to reach 15.5V. That's too high for most sealed batteries.

I would expect max voltages on your bike to be too high for sealed batteries.
So you should stick with a conventional battery.

You should be able to get a cheap generic conventional battery at you local bike shop.
Just checked the website for a local bike shop near me -- they have a Parts Unlimited 6N4-2A-4 for $16 each.
BAS (Bike Acquisition Syndrome) - too many bikes but have room for more

I knew you experts would have the answer, thanks. I'll pony up the "big bucks" for a conventional battery.
