homemade silencer / spark arrester

I need to make a silencer.
Was thinking of wrapping fiberglass around a length of copper tubing I drill holes through....any suggestions?....Copper ok to use?.....anything better than fiberglass to muffle sound

Weren't copper exhausts or exhaust components banned for some reason many years ago?
Can't remember why though.

Ended up rolling a perforated flat mesh with about 5mm holes throughout. Tube is 3/4" wrappedin fiberglass and fine steel whool.
Results are ok I guess, not super quiet and power is still ok. I had to adjust for low idle a bit too.
$3 investment vs ebay suzuki $90+....done for now.

...small update. the fiberglass and steel wool wasn't much of a sound deadener.
Have since packed the silencer with ROXUL insulation from HOME DEPOT......noticeable difference, much quieter! Seemed to improve over time as well, perhaps getting saturated.
