These are the 2 PE175's I have, the complete bike needs a rod and crank bearings, it was sunk under water during a race and wore it out. One of the parts bikes had a parts motor that has a good cylinder and piston that will probably be used on this motor when I go thru it.
This is one of the parts bikes that I have stripped and repainted with epoxy paint, rebuilt the forks with new seals and fork boots, this is the one the '80 model rebuilt motor I have is going in. It will need a carb and a set of fenders and tires, 2 bike rebuilds at once, easy, right?
Lane, where did you get the yellow paint for you 400, do you think it would stay on the plastic fenders and side panels? Those are a different plastic than modern fenders, more rigid, I think it waould stick pretty good, but not on the gas tank, it would rub off from my legs riding on it. Reproduction ones are pricy, DC plastic makes them, I may have to buy a set for the other bike.
The yellow I used was Plasticote, bight yellow enamel. It stuck fine to the fiberglass. Of course, I can't find it anywhere anymore...... and that sucks.
Our local Suzuki dealer carries Suzuki yellow and Yamaha yellow in spray cans.

You never know what you will find when you tear down an old motor. I tore down the PE175N motor, #109572
to put a new rod,seals and bearings in and was about to put the clutch
basket back in but I noticed it was grooved pretty badly. I have a
parts motor, # 112302 so I pulled the basket out of it, looks way
better. Put it in but the clutch gear didn't engage the primary gear at
all. 109572 had a 17/63 gear and 112302 had 21/58, which is correct.
Looks like the motor had a 125 clutch put in it with different ratios.
Was this done for a reason like a different ratio or just some back
yard mechanic swapping parts. Wouldn't it gear the motor down and make
it turn faster ? I'll put the correct one in, it was in better shape
anyway.
It may have been a racing trick. On RD 350s racers will sometimes use the RD250 bottom end with 350 jugs because of the lower gear ratios. Just a guess.

I got about one running, I though about using paint stripper on the motor but it didn't work too well on the cylinder & head, that old black paint is tough. I may go back and touch up the motor paint later. Boy, is this thing loud, Suzuki only put a spark arrestor on them, the silencer is only a turbin, no packing or preforated core at all.
That old plastic gets a white film on it that has to be scrapped or sanded off, you wouldn't believe how much better some of the stuff can be made to look. A little wet sanding and polishing works wonders, I got another tank that's a mess
Here's the other one I finally finished, got it together and it wouldn't run, no spark. I found a CDI black box on ebay and got it in today, fired right up. I put an original headlight on the one I sold and kept this one for this bike, the front fender is not the correct one, it's for a mid 90's RM, the rear fender is DC Plastic's repo. I kept the Progressive shocks too.
This is a Pro Circuit silencer for a Honda CR125, I cut it to where it would fit and took it to work and had a boy weld it.
