All Balls TS250 steering head bearings

Post by Tangent »

Was looking to upgrade to tapered roller bearings on my 1970 TS250, so went for the All Balls Racing kit that is listed as fitting the '69-'75 TS250's - kit number 22-1074.

This contains a lower bearing with an ID of 30mm, and an upper bearing of ID 25mm.

Needless to say - doesn't fit. Well, it doesn't fit the '70, but would fit the '71-'75's.

I found that the steering stems are different (I have one of each), as is the fitment system.

On the later bikes, the upper bearing does have an ID of 25mm, and the ID grips the steering stem - however, on the '70 (and presumably the '69), the ID of the upper bearing grips a flange on the bottom side of the steering stem nut and needs to have an ID of 30mm.

The lower bearing is fine.

I am not yet sure what width the top bearing needs to be - All Balls supplies 12mm, 14mm, and 15mm versions - will have to see what works.

I have messaged All Balls in the hope they will correct the information - and make a new kit, if they feel generous!
