New guy

Post by mike in ohio »

Hi, new guy here, I have a '74 TS250 that dad bought in about '81 or '82. It has been setting for I don't know how many years now, I want to get it running first, then work on the cosmetic stuff. I think it will be a fun little bike for short errands. I need a bunch of stuff though, first and second are an oil tank and pump.

Is there a cross reference that shows parts compatibility between models? As in what other models or model years use the same parts? I have a '74 parts manual on the way, but most people on ebay and other such sites only know what bike the part came off of but not what other bikes it might fit.

Thanks,

Parts like oil tanks rarely fit more than one model, I'm afraid. You can use parts lists at several web sites to compare stock numbers, but that's about the only way I know to do it. Ebay is your best bet, but it's possible someone here might have something. Welcome.

If you stroke it more than twice; you're playing with it.

Welcome.

Lots of Suzuki dealers have online parts manuals.
A few dealers have online systems that you can order parts from at a discount. I use Partzilla.
Link to Partzilla that points to your 74 TS250: http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/S ... parts.html

In Partzilla, once you’ve found the part, click on the part number to see the list of other bikes with the same part.
If the list is really long you might not see all of the bikes because of limits setup in the software.
If the part shows an original & current part number, click on both because the lists may differ.

You should also check your local dealer’s website. You may be able to get parts faster from them because its only shipped once.
Going to the dealer’s parts counter also give you an excuse to check out the new bikes.

eBay is a great source.
But check to see if Suzuki still sells the part & the dealer price — some parts on eBay are listed for more that the dealers charge.
Some good aftermarket parts are also listed.

Feel free to ask questions here if you aren’t sure about anything or needs some tips.

I'm pretty sure then oil pump and tank will interchange at least from '71 through '75. I bought an spare used oil pump with lines on ebay for about $35 delivered and gave it a quick drill test when I got it and it pumped oil just fine. When you get the tank be sure you also get the cap with the correct washer and disc inside. It's a vented cap and it has to be like that or the pump will ultimately quit pumping oil (once the suction collapses the tank ha ha ha). Cheapcycleparts and Partzilla both seem to access the same parts data base and Partzilla prices seem to be better in general.

I haven’t had any long term luck with the aluminum sealing washers Suzuki now sells for the oil line union bolts.
But stat-o-seal washers work great and are reasonable $$. I get them from McMaster-Carr: https://www.mcmaster.com/#stat-o-seal-washers/=18st56o

Partszilla shows the same pump for 71 to 75 or 6, but 2 tanks just for 74, one for the 250A and other for the 250K,L,M, and different part numbers for earlier and later tanks. I found a tank on ebay and bought it, hasn't arrived yet. But this brings me to another question how do I know what letter I have? I can't find it on the bike anywhere and neither of my manuals help.
