 Post subject: Oil injector?

I have heard different things from different sources regarding on whether or not to disengage the oil injector and mix my own fuel, or to keep it in and trust it will work properly. Any suggestions? Bike is a 1973 ts400k.

The crank is designed so that one main bearing gets tranny oil & the other gets injector oil. If you just switch to premix only, one of the crank main bearings will not have an oil supply. That will end badly.

You can switch to premix if you take the motor apart & make changes so the main bearing gets exposed to the premix. If you are interested in doing this, perhaps one of the forum experts can tell you what is needed.

If the bike has been setting for a really long time, the CCI system might need tending to. Same if its leaking. Otherwise its a simple design & tends to be rather reliable.

I totally agree with the two posts above. Pretty much all modern 2-cycle marine engines are oil injected. It's the way to go for sure. The Suzuki CCI systems are very reliable too and with the current synthetic 2-cycle oils they actually run surprisingly clean.

Why bother using premix? Its messy and a hassle. Its so nice to have an oil tank that you don't have to fill up every time you get fuel. Not to mention it may use less oil using CCI, saving running costs, lubricates the engine better, making it last longer and causing less carbon build-up means less frequent de-coking is necessary in your engine and exhaust.
Just make sure you have no leaks, the oil pump cable is in good order and adjusted correctly and no air locks.
Once set up properly, CCI is waaaay better than premix. I've had both over the years and the oil injection wins hands down. They only cause major hassle when owners fail to adjust the pump correctly (usually when they have fitted new throttle cables or adjusted the cables on the carbs and forgot to recheck the one for the pump). And adjusting them is easy. You only need a Haynes manual, simple tools and a few minutes of your time.
