Trouble getting into neutral frome first

Post by jarstephens »

Hey guys,
I have noticed that on my 1973 TS400 K that i cannot go into neutral from first gear, but instead have to go into second, then a half click down. I was talking to some guy at the shop that said it might have something to do with a plunger/spring near the shift lever? im pretty new to rehabing bikes so if anone could elaborate on that or point me in a different direction it would be very appreciated.
Thanks!
Joe

He's referring to the spring/plunger that goes into the lower case at an angle. It's purpose is to lock the tranny into neutral. The oil drain plug is nearby but goes straight in. Many people wrongfully take out the plunger and don't get it back in correctly. That could make it tough to get into neutral, but other internals could also add to the problem. Look at a parts breakdown of the tranny to see how the parts go in.

If you stroke it more than twice; you're playing with it.

Too many bikes, too much time, ENOUGH SPACE, FINALLY! Never enough money.........
