TS400 1976 Need some help

Post by GN87 »

I picked up a 1976 TS400 about a week back and it needs some things to get it running. I am a car guy and this is my first bike and I don't know much about bikes. I know my bike needs a carb, battery and I'm having trouble finding literature on these bikes. I need help with pictures, advice on wiring for battery and where to find a correct carburetor and how to hook it up. I don't know if my bike has all the essential wiring to even make it a trail bike? Eventually I would like to make this a dual bike once again. Also I've been told by a few guys to put a oil pump block off on and mix the gas myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There are online parts manuals. Your local Suzuki dealer’s website probably has one.
Partzilla.com has the parts manual & gives good discounts on parts.

Does your bike have any lights or were the removed?

The TS400 has a PEI ignition system, which is an electronic magneto that does not have points.
PEI is electrically completely separate from the battery & lighting circuit.
The bike will run perfectly fine without a battery but it will burn out the lights.

The service & owners manuals might be available online. You should be able to get them via eBay.

The two stroke oiling system feeds the crank lower end bearings directly. If you block this off & use premix, you will eventually ruin the crank lower end. This is something you can do with Yamahas but not Suzukis.

To post pics, you will need to first upload them to a photo sharing website like Photobucket & then include links to those pics in your posts. (The forum server doesn’t have any more space allocated for new pics.)

This is what the TS400 looked like when new:

Good luck & have fun with your new project.

My bike does not have any of the lights, was used as a dirt bike for years. So I'm going to get it running and fix it up and eventually make it back into a road/ trail bike. Thanks Jabcb for the info.
