Working on a 1970 TC120; airbox questions

Post by weasel_atty »

Hi all. I picked up a TC120 that hadn't run since probably 1975. Pretty cool vintage bike with all the parts still on board. Cleaned everything and changed the cables and the replaced the original tires. The airbox boot was unsalvageable, so I put on a K&N I had lying around and tried to start it up. Managed to get it going after a while, but it bogged on any acceleration. I started taping off the K&N to reduce airflow, and I have the bike running pretty good now. Thing is, I probably have the entire air filter taped off except a small square about 5mm on a side. That's not much airflow, but it is the only way to make the bike run properly.

So questions: Does this sound right, or do I have some massive air leak into the cylinder somewhere? I haven't started looking for a leak, but I will if this sounds likely. Or am I badly deficient in fuel flow?

And does anyone have a suggestion for sourcing a new air cleaner boot?

All suggestions welcome, and thanks!

Sorry for the late reply. Is your bike a TC 120 or TC 125? Don't see a TC 120 for 1975 but I am not an expert.

My question though is did you ever find your bogging down gremlin. I have a 1974 TC 125 and it seems to bogging down mid range. Timing is right on. Trying to see if it is a richness/lean problem or what. Like to hear your problems solution if you found it.

what type of air filter are you using? are you using the heavy foam dampened with oil?
If you are cutting off the air supply and it is running well, then you have a leak somewhere.
