Flywheel is stuck on.

Post by smokingbanana90 »

I can not seem to get my 1973 TS 185's flywheel off of the motor. I have used a puller but it just seems to get really tight and it doesnt come off. I am scared Im going to break the bolts for the puller and get them stuck in the flywheel. Is there any tricks to remove the flywheel?? Thanks and best regards.

You're almost there with the puller, get it nice and tight then give the center bolt on the puller a good whack with a decent size hammer. 24oz. Ball peen should do the trick. If it doesn't pop with the first hit tighten it a little more and whack it again.

It sounds barbaric, but that's how those pullers work. The shock of the hammer blow will break the bond between the two pieces of metal. Just remember your not trying to beat it into submission, one or two good well aimed whacks then tighten the puller a bit. Repeat as needed. When it does pop it will jump with some considerable force. It's not going to fly across the room but it could fall off the table your working on. Just be prepared to catch it or put a moving blanket down to protect it from hitting the floor.

Hope this helps!

Thanks! Your response was reassuring and helpful. I got the flywheel off this morning with the puller safely.
