72 T500 LH Switch Harness Question

Post by Syd »

Can anyone tell me how long the wiring harness with the plug should be from the LH switch on a T500 as my one just seems too long at 1m in length (39"). The harness follows the LH side handle bar down and around into the head light to plug into the main wiring loom.

I have a new main wiring loom but the harness from the LH switch seems to be the original part, however to me, it seems it should be much shorter by at least 250mm (10") in length. If someone has a spare LH switch with the wiring harness that they could measure the length for me, that would be much appreciated.

Maybe my one of from another model Suzuki like a GT550 or GT750?

Hiya, I restore gt/laverda/kawasaki/ switches, and have never seen one that long before!!! Looks like it was for a high Handel bar convention ( ape hangers) and the switch looks like, a gt750j ( 1972 left switch see phot's) striped back (should be satin black) I have some 75 j left switches, and will measure it and get back to you, with the length, what it should be ....

Hello, thanks for your comments - I think I have found the problem. The switch I have is not for a 72 T500 J (see the attached photo) which could explain things. I need Suzuki P/N: # 57700-28701 LH Handle Bar Switch which does not have the ON-OFF switch on the top and I assume the wiring harness is shorter. The problem is, I have be searching the planet today on the web and cannot seem to find one. Any ideas?

Cheers - Syd

How many positions does your ignition switch have?
If it has 3 (off, on & parking) then your left switch needs to have the lights on-off switch on the top.
If it has 4 (off, on, on with lights & parking) then your left switch does not have the switch on the top.

Thanks for that - I have just found out from a chap in the UK that in fact the switch I have for my J model is correct. The part number 28701 is printed incorrectly in the parts book, this refers to a TS125 switch. The wires are quite long on this model, and it is a “shoe horn “ job to get the wires all into the headlamp.

I will therefore refurbish my switch and maybe shorten the length of the harness so that it fits inside the headlight much better

Do you know for the J model, is the plastic sheathing for the wires black or grey?

Good score on the NOS cable.

Suzuki used gray on the 72 T250/T350.
This US Suzuki brochure for the 72 T500 shows gray:

Don't know when they switched to black.
It might have been in the middle of a model year, so the answer might be both gray & black for 1972.
