Ignition coils

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if there is an easy way to test if an ignition coil is faulty using a voltmeter/ tester as I have a couple of spare ones lying around. If so, which wires do I connect the tester to ? I've read in previous posts something about checking ohms. Sorry but I'm a complete novice when it comes to testing electrical components so any help will be appreciated.
Regards,
Glyn.

Cheers GTandcbr,
Thanks for the very informative link. I followed the instructions on the video but unfortunately my Haynes Manual doesn't give any numbers to check my results off, just says to contact my local Suzuki dealer if faulty coils are suspected. So I thought I'd post my readings here to see if anyone can tell me if they are ok or not.

Primary Readings as follows,

Coil 1 = 5.5 ohms, Coil 2 = 5.4 ohms, Coil 3 = 5.5 ohms.

Secondary Readings,

Coil 1 = 8.82 ohms, Coil 2 = 8.65 ohms, Coil 3 = 9.18 ohms.

All readings taken with plug caps removed.

Kind regards,
Glyn.

Hi!

To measure the primary side, choose the lowest OHM measurement range. (e.g. max. 200 Ohm)
Then first, connect the test leads directly. The meter then shows the resistance of the test leads.
This must be subtracted from the primary coil measurement result.
For secondary coil choose range with maximum around 20 kOhm. (= 20000 Ohm)

Readings, may differ slightly, up to 10%
Denso coils: prim.:3.7 Ohm, sec.:9 kOhm
Kokusan coils: prim.:4.3 Ohm, sec.:12 kOhm

Assuming:
Denso-Coils,
secondary readings show kOhm,
resistance of the measuring leads wasn't considered,
your readings seem to be OK.

If you look here at specifications it shows the figures you are after

Hi again,
Thanks for all the help. So it seems my spare coils may be ok to use after all.
