Replacement/Substitute Ignition Coil For 76 GT500

Post by BLAZY »

My coil is bad. It's cracked through and sparks leak out of it to the frame. The leads are dried out and cracked. Can anyone point me to an OEM replacement or suitable substitute coil that's not $300?

I'd like to finish my project ASAP. Two knee replacements in a year and bad arthritis in my hands will probably keep me off the bike, but it'll be a nice one for somebody. I'd just like it to be a runner.

Thanks.

Classic Suzuki in the Netherlands has one for a ~ $85.
Its listed under "new pattern" at: http://www.classicsuzukiparts.nl/2strok ... 0/?lang=en

A UK eBay seller has a new pattern part for ~ $62:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Suzuki-GT250x7- ... 1384444591

I don't know anything about the eBay seller.
Classic Suzuki has a good reputation -- I've purchased parts from them & have always been satisfied.

I would not be surprised if these two listings are actually for the same coil.

Good feedback on the Netherlands site. I'll give them a look.

I found the UK seller after I posted. I bit on the HT coil you highlighted. So, we'll see how long it takes to get to Texas and I'll report back on any fitment/quality/performance issues.

Thanks very much.

Doohh ... ic-tci-s is coil for inductive systems (points / T500) of course you posted it was for a GT which is CDI, they do do CDI coils as well but you'd have to check fitment it the same.

Sorry for the misinformation

Don't buy a coil listed at $50-$80 a piece simply because it's advertised for a particular vintage bike. These people sell the same exact coils that are listed all over Ebay for $15-$30. Just make sure the mounting holes, ohm rating is the same. Damn near any coil will work on any bike as long as it can be mounted and the ohm rating is the same.

The GT500 doesn't have points.
It has PEI + a single coil with two HT wires for the spark plugs.

The coil from Rex's Speed Shop in the UK arrived in my mailbox in Texas about 10 days after ordering. It fit into the brackets correctly, the wiring harness plug was correct, and there was plenty of 7mm spark plug lead length (I cut off about 6 inches). Once installed, it gave a good spark on both cylinders. Bike idles and accelerates smoothly. Overall, it did the trick for a lot less than the OEM/NOS parts I saw advertised.

Is that Rex's coil still working well Blazy?
(Looks like I need a new coil... after about a year long resto I finally fired up my '77 GT500 yesterday. It started easily, sounded nice, I just ran it for a couple of minutes to prime oil line etc, but when I tried to start it later I found no sparks, :? the coil secondary circuit shows no continuity, so I looks like the coil didn't like to be woken!)
Any other coil substitution ideas out there? (inexpensive options!)

Sorry for the delay. I was traveling. I've put about 10 hours on the engine riding around since the install. The coil is performing well. Engines starts easily (1-3 kicks) and idles fine. Smooth acceleration and cruising up to 75mph. Plugs look good.

THX for the useful feedback mate. (Although for me personally, I've now found that my coil is good, so I think it'll be down to the CDI or an alternator coil).

Check the ohms readings on the stator coils, if good, search on this website for my homemade CDI box. Very easy and very cheap to make. Mine has been working fine for four years, first one (prototype) cost me $60.00 usd. Now I can make one for $12.00 usd. So right now I have three spares just for kicks! No pun intended........
