GT 550 Headlight upgrade

Post by vmxwinn »

I have searched but can't find the answer. Is it possible to upgrade the sealed beam headlight in the GT 550 to a H4 unit?

TIA

Any 7" headlight should fit, such as Cibie etc.
Think of how stupid the average person is, then realise that half of them are more stupid than that.

There have been a few threads about this topic on this board in the past - see this link for example. In addition to Alan H's answer, Suzuki part 35121-34430 drops in for several models, but you'd have to double check the parts number crosses for your bike. 8)

As mentioned, any 7" headlight will work. You can buy sealed bulbs at Walmart for roughly $7. However, the newer 7" bulbs have 3 glass tits sticking out around the perimeter. No, big deal. Just grind them down with a dremel tool. Otherwise, the trim rings will not fasten over those new bulbs. The trim ring covers what you grind off. I have these bulbs on my bikes. I'll be damned if I pay $40 for headlight bulb, lol !

Thanks guys for the advice. I think I'm going with this;

Will the GT550 charging system support a 55/100 watt bulb?

I have one of those for my Waterbuffalo project. Check out the new LED H-4 bulbs. Look for a CREE one. They are BRIGHT as hell (which is the main reason to upgrade IMHO), fit in those housings and don't draw much juice...I bought mine on ebay for 20 bucks shipped.

I wouldn't buy it. That wattage is entirely too high for these old electrical systems. The bulbs I mentioned are a higher wattage and burn brighter. But, not nearly that high. I can't remember what stock is ? For a higher wattage bulb, you would have to bump up the charging rate of the regulator or you' ll have battery problems. And if you don't have headlight on at all times, you will cook the battery because the regulator would be bumped up to charge the battery using that higher wattage bulb. I have 1950 chevy car that I just learned how to properly adjust the regulator on. I'm eager to learn the same with these regulators.

I upgraded my headlight to HID from Xtralights.com online 3 year ago and they are super bright and cool looking like the HID lights on a Ducati. Check it out.
