The ether did the trick, bike finally fired up, I think all my mucking around with the tuning had sloshed excess two stroke oil and the initial start-up oil from the oil pump. One thing that does amaze me is the ease with which the kick starter fires the bike up, the electric starter has proven reliable after my initial concerns of it's state and the clean-up I gave it. Seat was nicely re-upholstered even though the shop used the 72/73 model cover and not the 74 pattern I asked for but a seat is a seat and I'm just pleased that it finally runs.

So the long sad story of getting my bike running. I rebuilt the points, changed the backing plate over, rest the points and timing. No improvement! Then I tore the carbs down for the 4th time, stripped them to the carb bodies and had them professionally cleaned in a shops' Yamaha carb ultrasonic cleaner, result, no improvement! Bike started and ran beautifully on 2 cylinders at all stages so was very confusing. I had some suggestions from the Face Book GT550 page that maybe there was a blockage in the exhaust pipe! At this stage I was willing to try anything so I pulled the L/H pipe off and found it was completely blocked about halfway down? What I had taken for an open pipe was actually a broken in half baffle, bent in the middle and stuffed full of wadding!!! So after a night in the shed wrestling with a torch and a bent coat hanger I managed to remove this object. Hopefully it will allow the bike to finally run on all 3 cylinders. :D :D :D

Was sent a lovely set of points on the plate with condensers from a contact in Australia, bike now runs brilliant and just waiting for the donor petrol tank to be painted so I can get some riding in. Was given a delightful ride on a friends GT550L same model as mine and only 24 frame numbers apart from my bike. What a hoot, can't wait to get mine on the road this summer.
