Earthing Points - 72 T500 Frame

Just in the process of assembling my 72 T500 after getting everything stripped down and all the black parts powered coated etc. Apart for what shows on my old electrical circuit drwg, are there any specific points on the frame that need to be cleaned back to bare metal to ensure there is a good electrical contact around the frame and the bolted on parts to ensure a good earth ~ ground?

Not really sure what you need as there isn't a heck of a lot to these and they are identified on the wiring diagram. The rectifier point, voltage regulator and at the coils are the main ones. You have to ensure the turn signal mounts have good contact otherwise they won't work. And I have added a ground lead to the gauge mount and the rear turn signals just because I normally do, but most of the return path is in the harness so making sure all the connections are as good as you can make them is probably most important.

Most of the grounds are bolted/threaded on. Since the threads on the frame mounting point won't be powder coated, you'll have a good ground connection via the threads.

The only exception that comes to mind is the rectifier. It held in place via a nut & isn't screwed into the frame. So the entire mounting surface on the frame could be powder coated. You may need to clean back this area a little so that the rectifier has a good ground.

I've actually had trouble with bolted on connections not having good connectivity on occasion, so I would have said that while normally you would be correct, its just something to check and be sure of. If you clean some of the area under the bolt head and run a tap through, then you should be good.

Many thanks for your comments guys - do you also need to also clean back the powder coating on the inside of the frame bolt brackets to ground the engine to the frame when its bolted back in place? Cheers - Ian

It might not hurt, but I admit I haven't done that. The engine is grounded via the harness from the points plate - no electric start, so no honking big ground cable needed like you see on the triples eh ? So long as you spend time on the loom connections and at the rectifier and regulator frame mount points it should be good.
