The biggest problem with the modern era strokers is the bikes need fairings to hide everything.
As they developed more HP they also became quite complicated.
Water hoses. radiators, oil lines, fuel lines, powervalve cables, throttle cables, choke cables, wiring for air solenoids, and extra hoses for air and vacuum needs.... You can barely see the motor with all the crap necessary :cry:
Although Suzuki did build the VJ21 as a standard type bike for Japan.....but it is still pretty busy looking under the tank compared to the simplicity of an aircooled stroker.

I had thought long and hard about building it as a cafe racer instead of going with original paint and bodywork.....still not sure if I made the right choice.

I had a TV250 Wolf. Never liked the seat unit, so I modified it to take a Mito unit. The motor was tuned to "naughty" spec and it's the bike I set my 250 cc fastest lap of Cadwell Park on.

Looks like a fun bike Gary.
I had started to collect some Wolf gauges and had been searching for the headlight and brackets.....then decided to keep it with full bodywork.

It is a much more comfortable ride with the higher handlebars. The single disc is more than adequate too (with race pads fitted).
It weighed next-to-nothing and kicked out 58bhp at the rear wheel (on the dyno).
One of the few bikes I wish I hadn't sold on.

I rebuilt a very dead and neglected GT250K as a run-up to doing my present GT550L and I learned heaps from the little beauty.

That is a very nice looking 250, from a time when two stroke engines had beauty and were part of the bikes style.

I made up my throttle cables, to work with the distribution box and the TPS, so I can have a 3D ignition map.
Also was able to adapt the factory choke cables to the Lectrons so I can control them from the handlebar.

Then I needed to work on the wiring and new ignition....
I started by taking the box and separating the wires to make it make it easier to hook up

what is the difference between the Dyna DC11-1, DC11-2, DC12-1 and DC12-2 coil packs?

I looked on the website and it is a bit confusing.
The DC12-1 looks like a pair of single output coils
DC12-2 is one single output coil
DC11-1 is a pair of dual output coils.....
I think that is how it goes....???? but definitely not 100% sure on any of it.


You still have the VJ23...?
Looks like Suzuki has cut off the supply line on some major parts to them...
I have a spare engine for mine, but no new bits for another rebuild :cry:

thanks for that info - guess I will buy the same as you have (DC12-1) and hope for the best.

Sold both VJ23's a couple of years ago. They are OK, but a bit sterile compared to the VJ21. Just my opinion, of course. :up:

Yes, "modern" 2 strokes are a bit busy under the fairings but some engines just should not be covered up :P

I've got my RG500 partly stripped for some routine maintenance. I'm glad I did as one disc valve cover was starting to delaminate. Looking forward to doing some miles this coming year.

The RG500 looks more user friendly to work on than my RZV500R.
I wish I had one of both to know for sure :mrgreen:

I have some friends who have worked on both and they would certainly confirm the RG is much easier to work on. After all, it is very closely based on the race engines. They do need treating gently though and there are several pitfalls. For example, if you look at the pics you will see the oil lines. They are so easy to trap when putting the carbs back.
