Randy.... That's a very interesting idea! I don't have any contacts at the VJMC but many times, I have seen small scale swap meets at drag races. That might be well worth pursuing.

Regarding 4-strokes at SE-Michigan, certain period bikes might really enhance the class but if you have near race-ready 2-strokes, that's the way to go! We have not made the change to include 4-strokes at MI yet but several racers have expressed some approval towards that change.

For me, there were several bikes from the 70s and 80s that stood out and would draw compliment 2-stroke bikes as well as draw a small crowd. The early Katana was one of them and was revolutionary. The SOHC Honda 750 was another. There are more...but half a dozen period bikes joining a dozen or more 2-stroke might be very appealing. I'd love to see a Yamaha TZ-750 at the strip. It would be incredibly unique but I don't know anyone that would build one given the cost to produce it!

Kevin, I hear that you set some amazing times at Man Cup over the weekend. Care to share those numbers

Had a great weekend at Manufacturers Cup World Finals in Valdosta GA this past weekend. Over 500 dragbikes from all around the world came to compete in 15 different classes from Top Fuel, Pro and Sportsman. Super Eliminator had 18 entries with eight 2-stroke bike and 10 4-strokes w everything from Harley's to modern Turbo Busas all running off IDBA national records and Indexes based on displacement, chassis, clutch and power adder modifications.

Alex Hughes and Bill Baxter of Texas won the SE event on their ultra light, low slung Kaw 750-H2 recording a best ET in the 7.90s and taking home the #1 Qualifier spot on their way to the win. It is only the secon time a 2-stroke has won the event.

I entered the Suzuki GT750 and ended up as #3 Qualifier and reset both ends of the record during qualifying, recording the first 8 sec pass on a GT at 8.987 sec and 150.8 mph.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy, you have put the GT750 in the limelight like no one else has since the TR750 roadrace days.
Congratulations...

How on earth did you spot that...? I am
Impressed!

Randy, I hope we get a chance to talk about you joining us next year. I'd really like to know your thoughts about running the Katana...

I do ride the Kat around a few hundred miles or more every year....just because I really like the way it fits.
But it is a 99% factory original survivor now, and only occasionally sees redline on long stretches. Its days of burn outs and tortured clutch baskets are over for the most part.
I just couldn't forgive myself if the basket, or any other part of the engine let go with any kind of continued strip use. It's been with me over 30 years now.... I have my 79 CBX and 78 GS1000 for hard, hammer down street and possible track use.
I'd be more than happy to ride up to 131 next year on it, and cruise through the pits though....

Randy, I certainly understand and would probably do the same thing to protect that Kat! I have always had a thing for the styling of that particular model...I just love it and glad I know someone who has one! It's an iconic piece of history!

I have been making progress this past week to open up the Super Eliminator-MI class to include both 2-stroke and 4-stroke w additional focus on entry level stock bike.

Race is in September but several of us will meet ahead of that for a day of testing and practice if your interested. We'd love it if you join us and get involved. There are a handful of new guys that are beginning to come and chase some of the stock records.

Thanks guys...

I would be interested in hearing more about a testing/tuning tryout kind of day....it's been about 20 years now since I've tested myself against the proverbial christmas tree. I think throwing 4 strokes in could get messy without some rules on age and appearance of the bike....or make it more specific to exact bikes allowed as in some vintage roadracing classes. 1980 was the first year of the 4 valve 1100 Suzuki (which can be bored to 1500)...which is still the bike to beat in the lower classes. So if someone was to want to build any bike for that class.....they would almost all go with the 4 valve Suzuki, and not attempt to use something older/more off beat/or untried before....Although a bone stock looking KZ or GS with an engine built up to 1500cc would be interesting to watch go down the track.
Maybe to avoid drag only bikes, a current registration for the bike that is racing might help keep bikes more entry level.
Or enforce a carb size limit....say 33-34mm which would negate anyone attempting to overbore much or go crazy on compression with a 4 stroke..?

I have seen this bike before,
I believe it was built by an old friend of mine,Roland Broadbent.
I'm not sure but he may have built the whole package.
