The '74 GT550 had the chrome bits on the dust caps as well...rngdng wrote:With those chrome dust wipers they can only be 74 GT750, or 75 model RE5.

Yes, but they looked different.

If you stroke it more than twice; you're playing with it.

According to the PN: the fork tubes for a 1974 GT750 are:
RH 51131-31230
LH 51141-31230
And according to the Zedder Cross Reference, here is a list of the other bikes that used the same PN:
Part # = 51141-31230
Part Description = TUBE,OUTER,LEFT
Model Count = 5
GT550M 1975 543 GT550 INDY STREET
GT750L 1974 738 GT750 LEMANS STREET
GT750M 1975 738 GT750 LEMANS STREET
RE5A 1976 497 RE5 ROTARY STREET
RE5M 1975 497 RE5M STREET
So the 1974 GT750L and 1975 GT550M should have the same fork tube (slider) machined to the same dims up top. But as Jason found out, his slider measured 58mm dia. on the '75 GT550 and mine was 60mm.
Here is a list of the bikes that use the chrome dust cover:
Part # = 51572-31230
Part Description = BAND,FRONT FORK COVER
Model Count = 6
GT380L 1974 371 GT380 SEBRING STREET
GT550M 1975 543 GT550 INDY STREET
GT750L 1974 738 GT750 LEMANS STREET
GT750M 1975 738 GT750 LEMANS STREET
RE5A 1976 497 RE5 ROTARY STREET

Almost.
I'm saying that my GT750L is 60mm at the top and 175mm ctr to ctr and that is the same ctr to ctr distance that Jason quoted for his 550M.
Your cross reference suggests that the 750 leg and 550M leg are the same part, so Jason's should be 60mm at the top, but he said 58mm, so ........
Beats the cr@p out of me.

If that's the case, then either Jasons tubes were machined down to 58mm (unlikely) or they are not 550M's. They are also not 750L's or from a GT500. He also said his chrome dust caps would not fit on the 500 fork brace so his sliders are also not from a GT380L.
You have the best approach...measure and submit. I emailed a list of all fork brace sizes and dims to you once back in October. Did you get that or do you want me to resend. It is very handy.

I dug out that list of dimensions, that I had completely forgotten about
It says.
GT550 58mm top
GT500 60/61mm top.
That is consistent with your bike Jason, and Kevin's. And the center to center distance is 175mm in both cases. And the GT500 dimensions are the same as those on my GT750L.
So it looks like the Spec11 list may be in error.

Jason,
I'm begining to wonder how accurate that Zedder cross reference guide is. So far, it seems to have tangled me up trying to sort out the correct fork brace based upon the slider PN's. As you know, I have doubts about my own forks. They are clearly shorter than they should be but that could be due to the actual fork tube (inner) as opposed to the slider.
Did Jim agree to swap out your brace for the correct one?

Progress for 2009
Among other things, I thought I would try my hand a learning to fill tank dents...chemically stripped original paint then applied two coats of light filler. Still needs another pass to completely fill the bigger dents on the right side.
Also fitted a 5.5 wide rim and some parts (sprocket and brake) from PMFR. Installed all new wheel bearings. Two on the sprocket side and one on the brake rotor side.
Engine work is progressing and Dave is helping me with the copper head gasket install..

Hi Jason,
I am thinking about the stock Suzuki candy lavender...probably the only color that will come close to matching beside all black...which I am also thinking about. The candy lavender will probably take 3-4 coats to get the correct shade. I think the lavender is not the correct year ('72) for the bike ('74), but I'm not sure the H2 racers will know that...
Lavender is not my favorite color but you are right about trying to get the rest of the bike to match.
