Acewell speedo/tach on T500: any comments or pics

Post by jabcb »

Thinking about using an Acwell speedo/tach on the T500 cafe build.
http://www.acewell-meter.com/portfolio/#Speedometer
Considering the ACE-6000, ACE-4000 or MA-085. They have analog tachs & the fuel gauge can be completely hidden. Plus they determine the gear by comparing the speedo & tach.

Any thoughts, suggestions or pics of your installs? Any installation or reliability issues?

Or maybe you would recommend a competitor’s product?

Purchased an Acewell CA80-400 speedo. Looks good. 0-9k rpm.

Purchased an ACE-S7 speedo cable drive sensor.
The pics on the Acewell UK website are correct.

DimeCity has them too, but their pic is wrong.

Took a 75 GT250 speedo drive apart to determine the ratio. Part # 54600-18402. Using it on the T500 cafe build. Also used by lots of GTs & GS bikes.
wheel gear has 26 teeth
speedo gear has 9 teeth
=> speedo drive ratio = 26/9 or 2.889

Stock speedo are 2240 rpm for 60 mph.
Stock tire size for calcs: IRC GS-11 3.25-19, diameter = 660 mm

So does the math work?
2240 rev-tach/min * 9/26 rev-wheel/rev-tach * Pi * DIA * mm/rev-wheel * 60 min/hr * 1/25.4 in/mm * 1/12 ft/in * 1/5280 mi/ft = 0.090817 * DIA mi/hr = 60 MPH
=> DIA = 660.7 mm :D

To set the Acewell speedo:
use number of pulses per wheel rotation = 1 , or “SPD P-001”
use wheel circumference = PI * DIA / speedo ratio
for 660mm wheel diameter, use PI * 660 * 9/26 = 718, or “SPD c0717”

You could also enter “SPD P-002” and “SPD c1435”
or “SPD P-003” and “SPD c2153”

Looking forward to see how well this works in spring.

I've actually gone the other way and taken the electronic Vapor dash off the 550A and put standard clocks on. The rev counter always did its own thing but now works fine.
Apparently it needs resistor plugs/caps and I like none resistor types for a better spark.
Bloody technolology..........

From the research I’ve done, the electronic tachs don’t work well with points ignition. Plus the digital displays like the Vapor’s tend to be more erratic than the dial gauges.

I’m using a GT500 motor with PEI. All ignition part are new. Uprated magneto coils, pulser & coil from Rex’s Speed Shop in the UK.
Using fine-wire non-resistor plugs (NGK B7EV) & resistor caps.
Am going to wiring in the tach lead to the CDI coil+ using the supplied resistor.

Least accurate is winding the pickup wire around the HT lead, then wiring it to the coil +, then wiring it to the pulser. Best is using a tach output from the ignition, which I don’t have.

My setup should be OK, but fingers crossed.
I have two backup options: fine-wire resistor plugs (NGK B7HIX) & wiring the lead to the pulser.
