Suzuki RB50 Gag bike.......

Post by garry55 »

always loved the little RB50 Gag bikes - had 4 of them over the years, 3 standard and 1 (HyperGag)that I fitted with a 125cc 4T motor from a pit bike. Good for 55mph, which was quite scary on 10" wheels......
Here's 2 of my standard ones, flanking my Yamaha YSR80

However, I have always had a hankering to build a 2T powered Gag bike, the only problem being the lack of suitable donor motors. The standard RB50 is fitted with a 50cc Birdie scooter motor, which has a horizontal cylinder. Fitting a motor with an upright cylinder can be done, but space is at a premium within the confines of the narrow beam frame. So the only option available is to make one, and here it is...........

If you look closely, you will see that it is half of an RGV250 engine, with the upright cylinder casting (mostly) removed. This is in it's raw state and requires more attention to the finish, the picture was taken whilst checking it fitted within the frame. A single cylinder RGV requires a one-off crankshaft. My crank builder built 2

and left it to me to decide which way to go with them. I have decided to use the one on the left of the picture for reasons that should become apparant as the build progresses. I now have to seal the crank on the left side of the motor, so it's lathe time......... :D

I worked in a Suzuki shop back in the late 80's when those came out. Our dealership had 2 of them and we couldn't sell them. So, one got bolted to the bosses wall on a shelf above his desk and one of the mechanics bought the other one. Being a fabrication freak that couldn't ever go with a stock motor, he squeezed in a RM125 engine into it.

We clocked him doing 80 mph one night about midnight on those little 10" wheels. Probably wasn't our smartest move...we clocked him by four of us following right behind him. Glad he didn't go into a tank slapper, he would have taken us all down with him.

Very cool Garry and looking forward to seeing how it comes out!

Many years ago I had an RX50 as my first road bike. That was Yamaha's 'cruiser' version of their YSR50. It was my transportation for an entire summer and even took it on a 700 mile road/camping trip.
No really... it's supposed to smoke.
