Because I already have 1st OS pistons, I am now considered in the EE subclass which is 740 - 779 cc. Unfortunately, I am at the wrong end with 748 cc using .5mm over.
I want to start my engine rebuild based upon 1.5mm OS pistons which I guess would be considered 3rd OS and give 770.9 cc displacement.
If I can find 71.5mm piston kits, I would really like to start there and give it a good run for the money.
Hi,
If you want to go a little further, I have a set of 72mm Wiseco pistons I can't really use...
PM me if interested - you could conceivably turn them down to 71.5mm.
Richard, thats an interesting thought to bring the bore back into a stock size. That would bring me back to 738 cc and allow me to run in the FF displacement subclass (490-740 cc) which has an Index of 11.3 sec.
I cant see scrapping my block and starting over...but dropping the piston back down, that might be worth considering.
Paul , do you also have the rings for those pistons as the old pistons you almost cannot get rings for anymore ? And if i remember correctly there are 2 types of wiseco pistons .. blue or Red box ?
And one of us has a set of blue box big bore pistons and rings that I may let go sometime soon.
Kevin,
11.3 is not too far off where you have been already and with some porting work and dyno time, i see a record in your future...
Get on the phone to the plating guys and let's see what we can come up with. It's a bit of a stretch to add so much plating, but it's worth asking teh question I think

Richard,
Red box... kit includes everything except wrist-pin bearings.

That was Dave that asked that question, not me...
Are you trying to say that you can't tell us apart?
Er, um, no, yes?
Hmmm, I should read the quote header more carefully - my eyesight ain't what it used to be....
Anyhoo... the pistons/rings/gudgeons I have are US$100 each. I'm not trying to make anything out of these - that's what I paid for them when I bought them, US$300 for the lot. I may have over-capitalized a bit.
I really can't use 72's so they're just gathering dust at my place - 71's or maybe 71.5's would be better for me to suit the barrels I have.
None of the barrels I have, have enough 'meat' on them to successfully go out to 72mm.
I assume they can be turned down by the right person - ring lands will have to be done as well.
What is the difference between the Red and Blue Wiseco Pistons? Do they both use the stock pins and circlips or does the Wiseco piston design require Wiseco pins, bearings and clips?
Kevin , if i remember correctly the red box Wiseco's are forged ( better ) and the blue box are cast like the stock pistons . They can take the wiseco special rings and flat spiral C clips but use the stock pin and top bearings .. i think
Below are two pictures that now hang on my wall in a nice frame. The first is from the Pingel Thunder Nationals at Indy in August. It was a huge thrill to make the finals. My two sons on each end ride Moto-cross locally. The older one rides a Yamaha YZ250F and the younger, Kawasaki KX-85 though I dont hold that against him...
The Certificate was given to me at the Fall Nationals this past weekend. It was given by Neville Lush Racing of Australia along with a cash prize for quickest reaction during Qualifying. http://www.lush-racing.com/
I feel like it turned out to be a great year and the bike is running more consistent and getting faster. Well, it will be a long winter here in Ohio but I plan to stay very busy working on improvements and getting this Suzy into the 10's for next season.
