T500 electronic tacho

Post by Fritz500 »

I have been searching the Interwebs for a nice little tacho about 2" in diameter that I can fit to my 72 T500. I see lots of articles on using marine tachos but no detail specific on how to run one off a twin cylinder two stroke.

Any of you folks had any experience?

I am rebuilding a T500J that now has a 72 GT750 drum and forks, ace bars 18" shouldered alloy rims front and rear. I only have a centrally mounted speedo but thought I may try for digital instruments.

I'm thinking of fitting one of these to the 550A I'm currently on with. Pretty innit?

I use a TrailTech and it looks good and small and unobtrusive but it's not to easy to read at speed

Almost any 4 stroke 4 or two stroke twin tacho is designed to get one pulse per revolution. I use an RGV tacho on one of our CB160 wasted spark twins. Grab one form any 4 stroke in line 4 that's small enough and its own unit

I was after an old fashioned looking tachometer with a diameter of 2" to 3", I was wondering if anyone can recommend one that works. Not everyone ships to Australia and some that do charge stupid prices.

RGV is about 60mm I think and is about as old school as they come.

If they won't ship to Australia, have it sent to me and I'll forward it to Oz. That's two lots of shipping, but if it's the only way....

tz375,
Thanks for your support and info.

I was after a tacho that has a scale up to 7,000 or 8,000rpm. Marine tachos often come that range (diesel ones go up to 4,000rpm typically).

I might email a few and see if they can tell if they'll work on a twin two stroke. I know what answers I'll get... :-(

These

are not exactly 2-3 inches, but they do work on a GT750 if wired to the alternator AC output. They are 10,000 max.

These auto tachos are closer but you would have to work out the pulse situation. If they have a single pulse per revolution option they should work

Or this Harley tacho

What's it look like? Is it a straight tach, or other extras on as well?
I intend fitting an electronic dash to the next 550.
