Flanged aluminium rims and spokes.

Post by titan performance »

Hi Guys.

A few weeks back, Tim and I were lucky enough to get a consignment of flanged Akront style aluminium rims, when a contact of ours increased his order, and sold the balance to us.

We have now sold all the pairs we got, and would love to buy some more. However, with orders we have from contacts and customers, we are still 65 pairs of rims short of meeting the manufacturer's MOQ. The rims we had were, 19 X 1.85, and 18 X 2.15, 36 hole, and were all sold to 500 twin owners. We know the 19 front isn't everyone's cup of tea, so subject to demand, we may be able to make that 18. The spokes were butted, polished stainless, and the whole package looks real good once built up. We wouldn't be looking to re-order if we were not happy with them.
I don't know about prices in the USA, but here in the UK, similar rims are around £230 GBP per pair, and spokes of this quality retail around £57 per set. With nipples, the total package will come in at £360.
If we could get to the MOQ, we could supply the package for £200, which represents a good saving.
Anyone with any interest at all, please post here, and we shall see what we can come up with.

Might work out to be a good deal to ship to the US, as the main source for these rims still appears to be European? Are you getting these rims from Morad/Central Wheel Components?

If you can figure out what shipping will be to the US, it would probably help us decide whether to get on the list or not.

Interesting read, regarding rims for the US market:

That was an interesting article. Thanks for sharing.

The other thing to keep in mind is that Italian rims tend to have quite a large jog where teh ends were welded and polished and that typically makes it difficult to use a dial gauge to true them up. DID and Takasago rims seem to be more concentric with less jogs and gouges. I have zero experience with Excel.

The question about that original article in my mind is how important were the errors that he identified. I don't know, but I'm guessing that for the street they are probably not critical, but that's just speculation on my part.

I'd be interested in a set of 18" wheels preferably both 2.15" or better still with the rear a 2.5" and the front a 2.15"

Yes, I will commit to a set for my 1976 GT500 cafe project. I was planning to buy off your website anyway.

I was talking to our wheel builder today, and he has just received a pair of Akronts in a similar size, from Central Wheels here in the UK. The cost to him was actually close to £140 per rim. The spokes were a further £48 per set, (trade), and were not shouldered. Apparently the butted spokes are considerably dearer. My estimate of the total package at £360 was most likely a little on the low side.
Our rims are not Morad/Akront, but on having a set to compare to, I would say they are absolutely identical.
We may look at bringing in a different sized pair to those previously mentioned, or even undrilled.
What sizes would you all want?

I have guesstimated the dimensions of the package, but I think it is safe to say that to send a pair of rims to the USA would not exceed £30 GBP, around 45 US$.

As TZ says, the Italian rims do tend to have a noticeable jog, or lump at the joint, and I would say that our supplier's rims are like that. But our wheel builder has 30 years experience in the trade, and he has said that while he would like to see a smoother join, the overall finish is good, and certainly more than good enough for the street. As I said above, think Morad/Akront,
they are identical in my opinion.
