Any of you kind and gentle folks bought a ultrasonic cleaner. I see them advertised for $30 to $100 for small units 30W to 60W.

I wanted to clean carbies etc and other bits and wondered if they were any good. Could also clean my dentures... :D

Cheers

We have one Fritz. We have used it almost exclusively for cleaning carbs. I think it's about a 2 litre capacity, which is big enough to emerse a pair of 500 carbs. To be honest we need to research using it a bit, as I haven't been entirely impressed with it. Aluminium comes out very dull, and generally needs some further cleaning to get a satisfactory cosmetic appearance....but that may just be down to us not using the right ingredient. It does remove just about all the clag and deposits though.
I'm sure there was a thread here very recently, showing some carbs, possibly from a triple, that had been ultra-sonic'ed and they looked absolutely beautiful, much better than ours.
Perhaps someone will chime in with some useful recommendations.

I'd be suprised if it removed whatever was making the actual alloy dull. I understand these devices remove dirt/grease etc. I assume oxides would require polishing or bead blasting.

I bought one from harbor freight here. The same one was sold under different names. It has been great, still works great after lots of use. It is great on screws and small bits. NOT carb floats though. I've read that there are many types of fluids/cleaning agents to use for different jobs but all I've used is dish soap. Works great cleaning my reading glasses too :)

Can you PM the brand name/s? I might check them out on FeeBay.

If you do a google search for "2.5 liter ultrasonic cleaner" you will find a lot that look identical. I counted 5 different labels (there are more) and prices that range from a minimum price to more than twice as much for the same cleaner. It is not big enough to submerge a complete carb in but when taken apart most of the bits can be. I have cleaned many larger parts one side at a time - just HOT water and dish soap does a pretty nice job. It was magic on the petcock strainers but destroyed all three of my carb floats.
