GT750J soon to find new life

Post by busa1300 »

I'm new here but not to two strokes....
a few shots of my long term RGV, and my new GT project

Are there any vacuum pump petcock rebuild kits out there for a J model?

The Busa is getting saftey wired up for the April ECTA-LSR meet in Wilmington Ohio end of the month. I will have had the bike for 10 years, and its finally time I use it for what it was designed for, before it gets put back as a secondary bike.

That's a reasonably complete early model J there. Good find.

Pity about the seat, but the rest looks to be in great condition. Was it running OK when it arrived or is it a "used to run" project?

If I could have come up with the money I had originally offered the guy two months earlier.....I would have had a mint original seat.

It hasn't been on the road for probably atleast 20 years..... petcock needs every part replaced, choke slides are frozen in their bores, intake boots are crumbling, spiders nest in the points cover, disinigrated rear inner tube, trashed chain, cut up wiring in headlight bucket for vetter fairing....... But atl east it has about 120 compression in all cylinders.

any help on directing me to a total rebuild kit for the petcock or carbs would help me keep moving on this diversion from the bikes I should be working on.....

That's a nice clean j75! in a better condition than the one i bought, (usa import) 2 weeks ago. Bought as a non runner, but all there (even the seat)
Needs mirrors (Got them)
speedo guage (Got one)
side panels (Got them)
seat (Got one)
I had a go at trying to turn it over, (not start) as the battery that was there, but as old as the hills, i used a car battery, and some leads.
It diden't do anything. Not even a click! so i took off the head light, and checked the plug from the start button.
Nothing... not working, :( so took both of them off, and refurbished . As to do one would look odd. I put the switches back on, and tried again, and presto, it now turns over. i took the plugs out to check them, and now have new ones, so have fitted new lead caps (ngk ) & have new plugs. (ngk) i had the plugs out, so easy to turn over. Image

Had a go at the guages and i think it turned out ok. Just a clean up, and not a restoration.
Image

AND AFTER A CLEAN UP & REPAINT. I just need to get 4 screws for the backs of the guages. i put new sleeving on all wires.

Intake boots are still available - or at least they were last year. Carbs have unusual bodies are are not stock VM Mikunis but all the internals are off-the shelf AFAIK.

Further to TZ375's post, with the exception of the diaphragm, the pintle o-ring and the small gasket under the diaphragm, most of the petcock seals etc. are still available from Suzuki. Until about a year ago, the diaphragm , and small gasket were available under Kawasaki parts listings, but that is no longer the case unless you can find NOS somewhere (51069-001 and 92065-052). The pintle o-ring may still be available - you'd have to double check, but I think it might be 92055-044.

You can still also buy a new petcock complete from Suzuki (44300-31051), but the cost is a bit eye watering in the USA and Canada at $274 in USD - its cheaper in the UK by an amazing $125 USD for North American buyers (no VAT) which should cover the shipping and import tax with some change left over I think. You can also buy from Reiner in Germany for about $208 USD.

If the diaphragm is in good shape, then H2Rick's bamboo chop stick method works well on the pintle seat, and an o-ring for the pintle is available in viton (better choice for ethanol contaminated fuels) from parts jobbers. 8)

Ian didn't HVC cycle have the seal kits for both of the GT750 petcocks, minus the diaphragm part?

Yes they do - for $30. Not sure if shipping is included in that or not, but the same parts from Suzuki to fit the J/K list out at around $17 depending on where you buy from. Although its true you do then have to source the small o-ring, my last once cost me $0.25. For the $13 delta in cost you can buy quite a few :D

Yes I have found all the rebuild parts for the petcock...except the diaphragm....(which mine is trash....)
So, if I can't get a diaphragm, then there isn't much point getting the other parts yet.
I have found all the carb parts I need though. It does turn over...with battery charger...and it popped a bit with some carb cleaner shot in. But I've got new points to put in it, and have to get the all the parts to get gas to it, to really try to get it to fire up.

I'll try and post some progress pics later today...

Do you need the fuel tap to be original or will one that fits and works the same way, be adequate?

The reason I ask is that many GS/GSXR bikes seem to use a similar tap with the same bolt spacing, but with more modern nylon filter. I grabbed one off ebay for mine and while it is slightly different, it was close enough (for me). There are several configurations, so you need to make sure that the pipes out the back are in similar positions to your existing tap.

I did spot carb diaphragms on a website the other day and because I wasn't looking for that part, I ignored it and have no idea where the business was located. So I can't give you a link to the URL and I can't confirm that they have your particular diaphragm, we know that someone is selling that part for something - vague enough answer.

heres a before and after of the carbs....I can get them clean, but now I need to get new parts to make them useful again.
Is the factory jetting as good as it can get with everything being stock? Since I'm going to get new jets, I can get what ever sizes work the best...

The fuel tap is cleaned up now.....just need to locate a diaphragm.... Or find a entire new tap in the UK...if I can find one for $150 or less. Someone was in the tap before me, as some parts are missing......
