GT750 Clearance between chain and lower muffler?

Post by RING_DING »

A strange noise while riding turns out to be the chain rubbing intermittently against the lower muffler. I suspect my left side mufflers may have been bent a bit by a fall, although they don't look wildly skew from the rear. The chain slack is about right (approx 1").
How much clearance should there be between the chain and the muffler at its closest point?

Roy what size toothed sprockets are you using? normally when the bikes on the ground unloaded, the chain is usually about an inch away or further from the closest part of the inner pipe.
Two strokes, its just that simple.

Allan, I have the standard 16/43 sprockets and a standard non-o-ring chain. I found another post which may shed some light on my problem:
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1929&p=88330&hilit= ... ler#p88330" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I'll do some measurements soon to check. The points cover was dinged at some point, so perhaps the fall bent the mounting bracket on the frame.

A 16 huh, how do you find the overall ratio, I personally find that gearing to be a bit tall.
I use 15/43 and find its great for touring into British Columbia where we rack up anywhere around 400 miles a day. It equates out to 3800rpm at 60mph in fifth.
A stout piece of lumber aimed from the other side of the bike onto the back of the mounting eye and carefully beat on the end, should knock it back around and the wood will leave no physical damage to the frame.
You will need to remove the pipes on that side and the rear wheel as well to make room for the wood.
That reminds me, my RE5 has the same problem and I need to fix that also when I take the pipes off.
Two strokes, its just that simple.

Allan....yes I do find the gearing quite tall with the 16T. I may try a 15T as you suggested.

My 76 had in a 16 and it was awfully high, especially the clutch transition to move off in first. I did however leave the 43 out back, and once it was changed out up front it was very respectable.
With the 15-43 combo the cruising 'sweet spot' is around 75 to 85 mph in fifth.
Try swapping it out and report back, I suspect you will like the slightly lower gearing.

Happy to report that the 15T sprocket is a big improvement. Much easier take off in 1st.
The removed 16T was just about end-of-life as you can see!

Also, the mystery noise is gone.....I used some leverage to bend the exhaust mounting bracket outwards, so now I have good clearance between chain and lower muffler.
