Yes the tanks are from a 75M. I got them from ebay years back. They were NOS. I do have a original 71 tank but the color is faded and the petcock nipple needs repair. My Geck0 tanks are on my 1972 which have the badge holes filled with bondo and I have 2 other sets prepped and waiting for paint. I am looking for an original set of tanks of the 1971 paint.
Overall I’m going for the used look (previously enjoyed) But the parts need to be in very good condition. I have seen the Paul Miller & Titan SV restos and I think they are beautiful. Like I said I want the look of a well kept everyday rider for my 71 and this takes time.

Got her all back together. Put about a gallon of gas in the tank. Kicked it over a few times but something didn't sound right. Pulled the plugs, grabbed a dry set and checked for spark. When I kicked it over ,gas came flying out the plug holes. Well It seems all the gas I put into the tank ended up in the cylinders. (That is gas in the pan under the bike) The first problem I found was a rip in the 4 hole gasket in the petcock. Luckily I have a rebuilt one on the shelf. This time I checked it before I installed it on the tank.
Now even If the petcock was bad The float and needle valve should have keep the gas from poring into the jugs. I have a few carb sets and some used parts around. TomorrowI will build a clean setand try again. Like I said in a earlier post ,The carbs were very bad They sat a year on the bike. I forgot to drain them and now I'm paying for it.

Got back to it yesterday. Set the timing with my makeshift dial indicator .133 BTDC and my DMM to find point open position. All checked SPOT ON

Put a gal of fresh gas in and kicked her over.
She started first kick    Didn't run to well. Probably cabs out of synchronization. I mess around a bit with carb screws abit but it got worse :wth: I pulled the two crank case drain plugs and found a bit of gas/oil (typical). I replaced the drains and kicked it over, Sometimes it would start but would not stay running. I did this a few more times .

I had the drain plugs out and kicked it over but I had forgotten to turn off the key.
All of a sudden it started to run. I mean it ran good :?: :?: :?:
I did the drain plugs in again but no run, It will only run with the drain plugs out. Im setting up a differant set of carbs tommorrow maybe they are the fix

I need help on this one.

sound to me that you've got a blockage in one of your jets.
do this and I'm sure it will fire and run great.
I know its a bit of a chore but I'm sure theres one jet that you cannot get at.
and this little bugger gave me no end of grief till I did this!!!!!
household vinegar yes the ones you put on your chips!
I've use this a couple times and it work a treat.
OK its not a triple but never the less same principle
my old T500 would not run right and there was one jet that I could not get at and I was sure this was causing me greif...
all oils and grease needed to be washed off using petrol.
take the carbs apart ..leave all the jets(you can take the ones out that will come out.
put it all in a plastic tub etc and leave it to soak for a day or two.
mine came out lovely and clean and problems solved
If I wanted to make a life-long career out of

have opened a Harley Davidson Dealership

Aside from the running issues Gecko.....the bike looks superb ! Brings back fond memories for me of my first T500m back in 77, which looked exactly the same........still have it incidentally.

You got me by two years. I have had my 1972 (geck0) since 1979, It was a chopper with ape hangers. No kidding. In 82 I sold off the long tubes, handle bars, sissy bar for stock parts. That's right. I tooled around for three years on a T500 chopper. Sorry no pictures of the chopper mod that I know of.

I figured out the problem  and now she kicks over first time.
All I need now is an inspection sticker and some open road.

I was about to install my super "D" duper cleaned carbs. I started by removing the cover of the left side and pulled the slide assembly up and out. You guessed it. The cutaway was facing the jug. Thinking about for a bit, I reailized how it happened.
Because of the issue I had with the cut gasket in the petcock that ended up in the neddle valves that pased all the gas from the tank to the crank quickly.
When I pulled the carbs, I left the slides cabled and pulled them both to one side. which I typically never do. When I installed them back I must have grabed the wrong one first.
This is why I never came across the possability of mixing them up.
