If the reservoir o-ring was leaking it will only ooze around the edge and settle under the lower side of the body. Any fluid spurting out would have to come from the ends of the piston either a leaking banjo fitting or a bad cup inside the cylinder.
You have another issue needing some investigation but its obviously serious enough to make the lever travel get high after not pressing it for a while.
Two strokes, its just that simple.

"Braking" news...I have front brakes now fully operational. I did a thorough inspection of the master cylinder, and the few drops of brake fluid I saw last weekend was just some residue from the re-assembly. I unbolted the master cylinder from the handlebars and I think some more air may have been released with all the twisting & turning because now there is no sponginess and I don't have to pump the lever to get pressure.

Yes I'll be there. I was there for a practice run on my Triumph the weekend before last. Unfortunately stuck behind a truck so that's why you can count the spokes in my wheels:)

Thank you Dan! I've enjoyed every minute getting her back into running order. Much credit is due to the members of this forum who have helped me overcome some of the challenges I faced.

Fitted new points & condensers today. Set timing with a strobe to factory marks. Made a big difference to performance, and seems to have got rid of the pre-ignition. However, I am hearing something else at low revs under load. Its louder than pre-ignition, sounds almost like arcing in one or more HT leads. Sound familiar to anyone?

Mark, thanks for the tip. I did as you suggested and sure enough, on the left and center, the gap between the plug cap and the plug itself lights up when I blip the throttle. I would assume there's some arcing going on at the plug tip. What is the fix for this? New plug caps and/or HT leads?
