Help with tank decals

Post by Chel_in_IL »

Allan's Suzuki shows the orange tank and white/black decals. Looking through the microfiche (servicehonda.com) I find many different original part numbers that were superceeded by another part number. http://www.xtremeusa.com/fiche_section_ ... &fveh=1875 Originally my pinstripe was gold/black, but I want the white/black. Can anyone help determine what I need?

Michelle,

Go to http://reproductiondecals.com

click DECALS (top left), click on the year and select the black and white for firemist red tank.

Actually Michelle my tank stripe decals are not black/white they are black/met silver which to me looks better than the black/white.

Richard your link was not working for me..

Just remove the 'comma' at the end of the link Richard posted - that will get you there !

I personally have had fairly good luck with Reproduction Decals and will buy decals from them again - for reproduction badges, the outfit I buy from is Badge Replicas in Australia who I'm also quite happy with.

:)

It's just a lot of this-n-that.
Cosmetic:
One of my coil wires is bandaged up with duct tape. (Can I get just one coil or is it the entire pack of 3?)

I'm missing a little c-type clamp on the brake hardware on the front wheel. Right now the hose is held on with a zip-tie.

One of my side cover badges had the cool metal-orange flake partially missing, I temporarily repainted it but either need to replace or reproduce the finish (I read another post where someone had the orange metal flake mixed up). In any case I tried to scrape out the old orange metal flake and was unsuccessful.

I'd like to remove and paint the side and center stands, as well as the mounts where the rear blinkers are. I already painted the triple tree and driver's peg mounts - they look nice.

Eventually would like to find an "original looking" seat. The one I have is a $50 ebay find. Looks fine to me so I'm not too worried about it.

Would like a chrome rear rack too. The one like you have has seems to complement the bike well.

My speedo gage has "rust rain" on the inside of the lens. For a 33 year old bike with 48k miles, I can't expect much better. But, it annoys me. I read a thread on how much a paint these are to take apart. I redid some guages on a GR650, but they weren't sealed like these are.

I'm missing a red side marker. I ordered a pair of amber ones off ebay and thought perhaps I can pop the lense out and replace it with a red one from the one someone else mentioned in another thread (but the plastic backing was black.) Otherwise they will just end up amber. :)

The Water Cooled decals on the side of the motor need repainting. I was running out of time (and gusto) on Saturday so I painted them what I thought was orange, but they turned out.. pink. Ugh. Anyone know a Testors color that matches? The metal decals themselves are fine, just need the right color. :)

Some washers, etc are rusty... just want to replace them so they look nicer. It seems one of the former owners just grabbed any old washer and threw it on, so they are mismatched from one side to the other.

My boyfriend hasn't yet made the new head nuts; new owner for the shop he works at, so it's fallen on the back burner for now. I took out the ones I could (one at a time) and polished them up with the dremel. The middle ones seem inaccessible unless the motor is pulled.

Mechanical:
I have a leak of some sort from the left front. I found oil splashed on the top of the side case and it went down the top left exhaust pipe. I was pretty exhausted after the ride this weekend so I haven't taken the time to look at where this "leak" is coming from.

I need a chain, need to determine size/links.

The speedo needle bounces. Prolly just need to lube the cable. (?)

Otherwise mechanically she runs fine.

But I tell yah what, it was REAL NICE to have a working choke this past (40-some degree) weekend!! :) Thanks to Lane for sending me the choke rod!

Lets not forget what she used to look like.. (cover eyes)

Thats a healthy list and i can point you in a direction with most of it so here it goes in the order you asked.
Coils show up on ebay often but you can replace one if you choose, maybe some one here has one to donate.
The c clamp i take it is the one holding the hose behind the fork?? sorry i dont have any spares
Rngdng (Lane) has a formula for taking the new red badges and making them glitter with a certain brand overlay of glitter paint so PM him.
I hear you on refurbing the black painted parts, its more a labour of time than money.
Seats are still available but its going to cost you anywhere from a good ebay one needing a re-cover to a new one, price range 0 to $250.00.
My rear rack is a genuine NOS one i found after a while of serious searching, it came from the UK. Johnakay here on the board makes racks very close to original ones, hes based in the UK as well.
Gauges for Buffalos i restore so you can deal with me on those issues, see that one was easy to solve. http://gaugerestore.webs.com/
Red side markers are available but they only show up on ebay when youre not looking, you can use the ones from the GS1000 tail cowl or be patient and keep scouring ebay.
Water cooled decals are still available, HVC cycle has them as well as full petcock rebuild kits.
Some Ace hardware stores sell metric washers in flat and split,as well as allen head bolts and regular hex bolts all in Stainless, a perfect update if you are not a conccours person.
Check that leak carefully i hope you did not burst a fork seal.
Chains are subjective to some critique of brand loyality DID, EK, RK, etc but definately get an Xring model of about 9000psi rating. You will need to add maybe one or two front sprocket locking washers to the back of the drive sprocket to move it out a tad so it does not rub the cases. #530 is the size and 120 links is standard fare and then you cut it to suit.
Two strokes, its just that simple.

Yup, that's it.

Yup, I remember you do that. I like the pics you have on your website and the virgination of the odometer. We need to discuss the repair of mine.

Yah, but I'm pretty handy with a paint brush. :) I redid the black on the emblems with no issue. I did find new ones on ebay for about $28 shipped.

We have a great hardware store here in town that if they don't have it, no one does. I have already taken a few parts there and they asked, "stainless?" So of course, I jumped on that.

Um, good call there. I would probably have not looked that far forward on the bike (at first). It seems to make the most sense tho. I've never done fork seals before.... the tone of your response worries me. :(

Well we can discuss the gauges at any time and now ive seen them basically i have an idea what youre looking at,,,,,literally.
Judging from the condition of that speedo gauge id say a portion of your needle jumping issues are internal rust flakes stuck to the spindles.
PM me for details and discussion as youre ready to go that restoration route. I do notice your bike has on the 77 warning lamp cluster, 74-76s had a red high beam lens and green gear indicator lens.
The rest you have checked off in order so thats good. Theres nothing scary about the fork seal renewal, its basic and simple, mostly time and labour,,,,again.

The Watercooled emblems are available from Suzuki for less than that and you don't have to pay shipping. I don't know if the red side reflectors are correct on a A model, they were on the earlier ones. Which side front brake hose clamp do you need, I may have some.

From what I have gathered the Watercooled emblems are discontinued. I buy most of my parts from servicehonda.com but they don't tell me if a part is obsolete. I have found that checking the part number at speedsupplies.com will show if it is obsolete. (They are slow and unresponsive to buy from, which is why I use servicehonda.com)

The ones on ebay included shipping for $28.

I will check which clamp it is, but I believe it's the left (driver's side haha).

Was the oil black or "clear" and was it running down the pipe or splattered on the front of the pipe?

A common problem is leaking from the header where it bolts to the cylinder and when that leaks it's black dirty oil.

It is small spatter of clean oil drops, it's more likely to be the forks. Replacing seals is easy. The hard part for most people is propping up the front end to get the wheel out and forks legs off.
