Gt185, where to Start?

Post by Ponds »

A 1977 185 has come my way, I thing it appealed as I had one back in the day. I’m already struggling with spares! It will need a full strip down, a first look tells me a new LHS exhaust is essential, and the barrel exhaust threads are FUBAR. It does run though, but this will need lots of parts! So, where to look in the UK?

Hi and welcome to the forum. Love the GT185 great little bike! What is the history of the bike? Has it been standing for a long time or regularly used until you got it? It is possible if it has stood for years that the seals on the crank could be shot, it is worth knowing that the engine will run if they are. Here are some links to help you with parts and don't forget Ebay is your friend.

The history is unknown, plenty of previous owners though. The tyres are like cracked plastic, the air filter is dust! 13k miles. The crank seals are probably toast too, it does run but it won’t see a road test for many months. I’m assuming that the engine will need splitting, can you get these cranks refurbished?
Great links thanks!

Excellent, Applebee’s looks ideal. Many thanks for that, they may have some help to offer with the barrel exhaust mounting too.
