Hang on. Aha, i see. You're talking about the second shaft, not the one on the back of that lever with the teeth?

thanks for you speedy reply. Much appreciate
I am curious about something. Assuming you had the gear shift shaft return spring positioned correctly when you buttoned the engine up and it sounds like you did, that is, it sounds like you rode the bike some before the problem started. Is that correct? So what keeps the gear shift shaft end from sliding outward even just a bit...enough to somehow slide out/off the cocked spring's 'tongs' ? On the T500 there is spacer used between the gear shifting shaft end and the clutch cover but I don't see a spacer or an 'E' ring or the like in the GT380 parts fiches. Does it just butt against a certain spot on the clutch cover? I guess I'm just missing something, anyway, just to be clear, here are pics, from an inside angle, of the return spring 'cocked' and 'uncocked' ......spare T500 shaft but same arrangement..........

Correct =

Ah sorry, my mistake. my description of the position may be wrong then!
Knew it was on that shaft somewhere as it wasn't too long ago that I reassembled my GT380 gearbox and it looked familiar

If they don't come on the back of the bike, you have to seriously question the relationship. Bikes, before women right?

GT550s, GT750 and a GSX1400. Nothing wrong with different.
Think of how stupid the average person is, then realise that half of them are more stupid than that.

Yep. Bikes are like women, they each have their own unique character and, no matter how hard you try, riding two at once is a recipe for disaster!
