Suzuki 2 Strokes

Aren't time serts great ! I'm just starting the rebuild of my T500 cafe racer, and plan to use some ported barrels (sorry, jugs), that I have owned since about 1980 but never used. As with all 500s I work on, I replaced the exhaust header mounting bolts with studs .....and then checked the M8 threads that retain the heads. All 8 were pooped ! Two had been heli-coiled with some obscure sized thread, and the other six were toast. 15 minutes and a bunch of serts later, and they are all repaired better than new !

Do any of you guys over the pond have a good source for the inserts, as I have used all but a couple of my stock, and they are silly money over here?

Have always preferred timeserts over helicoils. They really are a better mouse trap.... Like "the best oil discussions" I'm sure my comment will open Pandora's box. Lol....

I bought one of these kits http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BERGEN-88pc-T ... SwT~9WkY9m" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for exactly the same purpose on the GT550 and it was fine. Used different sizes successfully too.

They also have another product called 'Big Serts' which is handy for repairing holes back to standard size. I often use them on exhaust ports. In the photo, you can see one to the right of the package.

I personally have no preference as both work equally well. The priority comes when the hole has been butched and a Time Sert is the only option, otherwise a helicoil is perfect on a first stripped or damaged threaded hole.

on my last T500M I made my own time serts.
bought a 12mm threaded bar and frilled the hole out myself and tapped it. worked fine for me.
still have some left.hopefully I wont need it when I get my new bike.

damn, thats some talent! even with a drill press its hard to drill straight down a threaded rod like that. I personally love time-serts but I always heard them called keen-serts. I friggin HATE heli-coils them damn things are the biggest pieces of... Its like the difference between Snap-on and the nameless chinese tools lol
