I thought this should go under restorations..........

Post by Alan H »

Yesterday I had an Avon Patellofemoral Replacement, which basically means that they cut a hole in me new suntan, pulled the right kneecap out and gave it a service. Line the back with metal, fit a nylon/plastic bush to the femoral bone and bung it all back in. I did ask for a grease nipple as well so I could give the bearing a quick lube every morning, but they wouldn't for some reason. They draw an arrow on the leg in question in case they forget which to do, but you can't be too careful, so I wrote a big 'NO'°on t'other one. Should be in here a couple of nights then home on crutches for a couple of weeks. They reckon no driving for 6 weeks,÷but the car's an auto so shirley I can drive using the left. Douglas Bader managed after all.

Image
The CCI pipe has putoline in and goes direct to the main bearing.
Image
Needs more oil! (actually this is 'stuff' that's drained out of the op and the red pipe is the drain from the op..)
Image
Direct lubrication deleted. Now the knee is on premix!
Surprising what they can do with a sewing machine nowadays isn't it!

Bugger! -Though I notice that your bikes have electric legs, (GT550) -lucky, 'cos your kickstarting leg is going to be about as useful as tits on a bull.

Got to keep positive otherwise what's the point of it all?

The gorgeously fit young lady who does the physio will be back later to motivate me again - she has lovely warm and soft hands.

Hope the wife doesn't show up while I'm being motivated, otherwise it could be troublesome! Image

Physio and see the specialist yesterday. Progress is being made, but obviously not fast enough for my liking.
Basically, I'm more or less banned from the garage for another couple of weeks-ish until I get more movement into the knee joint, so there's lots to do, plenty of time to do it, but I can't get in there!
Bugger.
Anyway, the bandage is now off so I can get some fresh air to it now. Hopefully the neighbours won't mind......
Still all swelled up and chuffin' painful though.

Incredible what they can do these days. Hope you heal up quick! A word of caution, I would avoid driving with your left if you can. The brake and accelerate reflexes are hard wired in your brain at this point and the extra seconds it takes to make your brain use the other foot could cost you your life.... Just enjoy being driven around for a few weeks chauffeur style 8)

Cheers Dude, I've moved the car on the drive so I can get in the garage, but the left foot brake control is very heavy!
I'll let SWMBO run me around in the Little Hyundai i10 for the time being as you suggest!
The knee/leg is slowly improving, and hopefully another couple of weeks will give most of my mobility back.

I've both knees apart a couple or three times now to mess with the cartilage, polish the knee cap and vacuum out the broken bits. The next time round will likely be replacements, but I'm trying to put it off as long as possible. Most of the artificial ones last about 20 years now, so I figure if I delay a few more years till I'm 75 or 80, then that should be about right ! 8)

Physio again today, muscles are 600% better than 2 weeks ago, but need to be 600% better than they are now (as measured by a microvolt muscle voltage detector) - started at 3.1micro volts, now 24.1, left leg is about 150, so plenty of work still to do.
Knee angle is now about 20 degrees from straight (it will go straight if I make it, but not with muscle just yet), and 115 degrees bent, which it was only about 85 degrees last week.
So another week before I can get under the 550 to change the starter motor, but as the Santa Fé is a V6 auto, I've had a little tootle about and the right foot is fine with a 2 pedal workout.

Good to hear you are making progress Allan. I'm not familiar with this 'micro-voltage detector', and when I tried to Google it, nothing useful really came up. What is this ? 8)

It's all down to Electromyography and galvanic skin inductance!
Unfortunately, I can't remember the details of the little hand held meter jobby, but I'll get info when I see the guy next week.
Google doesn't seem to know much about the subject.......
