GT 750 restoration

Post by bofud »

Thought i would start here .Will be getting the bike Jan 25/2015. Have not even seen it yet. Got a phone call today from a friend who is bringing it down to me. He said it was in pretty good condition. Approx -13,000 miles. Last ride was in 1999.
Vin # 29543 , can anyone tell me what info is contained in the Vin?
Thanks

The VIN was just a sequentially assigned number. You can determine the model year.

VIN GT750-29543 is a 1972 "J" model.

Here we go -barn fresh ,100 footer , well not a barn but from under a tarp in a carport. At least it was under cover and out of the rain and snow. So we begin.

GREAT FIND!!! That should be an easy restoration.

If you stroke it more than twice; you're playing with it.

Wow..love a fresh gt750j find.. that's even harder to find one original and all there.. No need for that rack, there's better designs out there..all I would do is clean it up, ( keep it stock ) change all the fluids, new plugs, fresh gas, and a new gel battery. ( more cranking power. ). & if it starts, steady rev...tick over.. get the cobwebs out of the engine.. old girl...

Man, the paintwork on that tank looks fantastic! Is it as good in real life?? Just love these old survivors and how they keep popping up. I always fear that the world has been strip-mined of old original bikes - but we should never lose faith obviously

Yes Kettle kid ,that rack is coming off today. It is a part of the Bates hard bags that came with the bike. I'm of that era but those are pretty hard on the eyes. Will be needing a grab rail if anyone on this site wants to part with one?
MikeH1A-it may look good ,but it's not, a lot of little issues we have to look at . All in time will be sorted out .
It was sitting , under that tarp for 16 years. I got into it a bit last night and found that its not too bad under the tank ,lot's of cobwebs and the typical surface rust from moisture in the air. All round a project that is all there, lots of elbow grease and patience i think. Will do my best.
I'm in the middle of 3 projects right now ( 1973 CB 450 , 1977 XL100, and a CX 500 Cafe' ) so i think a few minutes ,rubbin on the GT will come.

Not get off topic, but what color is the the switch gear supposed to be on 76 Buffalo?

On my bike the clutch side is white and the throttle side is orange.

Thanks!

The lettering is orange on both sides, the flasher/indication has a small white inlay...

Did a little more work on the susi today. The carb slides were frozen ,could not move the throttle. Took a while but got them going. Just doing a clean up as much as i can. Discovered i only had neutral ,could not move the shifter. Tried to remove the cover and found the shifter shaft frozen on the cover. Took a while ,got her off and cleaned the covers -lookin good. Pleased with progress but other projects left alone today. Not a good thing.
Got to get (she who must be pleased ) out shopping with sister so i can try to spark her up,now that the carbs are working.
