This petcock on a GT750

Post by Suzsmokeyallan »

This particular petcock was fitted as standard on a one owner 75 Buffalo from new. It appears to have no filter screen and no catchment bowl on the lower portion. Has anyone seen a design like this before???

it appears to be a GS550 petcock. probably fitted by a dealer/mechanic to replace the original.

A quick explanation in case anyone else wants to try their own search for parts.

I looked at the photo and could see "470" and that's usually the model code. On a GT750 that would be 210 or 312 typically. No guarantee but a good place to start looking.

Then I looked up the GT750 fuel tap and it came back with 44300-31051. 44300-33151, and 44300-33152, So I tried 44300-47051 and google turned up several references all as a superceded part fitted to a 77/78 GS550E.

That doesn't mean my deduction was correct, so I google images of a GS550 fuel tap and some of those images looked just like this one. Close enough for me.

Only one problem with that deduction Richard is that a GS550 didn't exist in 1975 when the bike was bought new by the one and present owner. According to what I'm told by the owner it was bought this way and thats the tap it had on, so what other bike could it have come from back in 1975???

That looks similar to the one on my 78 GS1000. It's square like that one with no bowls or screens The big difference is the outlet on mine is horizontal on the right side when viewed from the lever side. Can't say I've ever seen one with the outlet on the bottom like that.
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.

Allan,

Got to believe that it was fitted by a dealer when there was a problem with the original, after the year of original manufacture.

Richard, I know what you are saying by the three digit stamped code and such information, but I'm only going by what hes telling me.

I understand that Allan and it's an interesting one for sure.

If you have the opportunity to talk to the original owner, it might be interesting to know if he ever had it in to his local dealer for service or repairs. And that assumes he can remember everything that ever happened to the bike when he owned it.

I also find old bikes fascinating and wonder what the story is behind some of the things that were changed or damaged. It's all in the story and sometimes it drives us nuts trying to work out what that story was. It's also possible that my deduction was wrong, which is why I explained how I came to that conclusion.

Oh I know what you are saying,,, I'll ask more in depth questions about this to see if the story changes. His mind is quite good as he even remembers what he paid for it, and I only remember part of it,,LOLOL.
The bike was around $1800.00 and change when he bought it new in 75. I'd say a Buffalo kept in good condition has appreciated a slight bit,

Allan,

That last comment made me stop and think about price rises. I was going to take that 75 price and raise it by the compounded CPI or bank interest rates, but decided to try something simpler - The Dow Jones. In December 1875 it was wait for it...

852.41 No kidding. It was 852.41 and now it's around 16,000. There are not a lot of stocks that were in the DJI in 75 that are still there so it's not a valid apples to apples comparison, but that's a rise from 852 to 16,000 or 18 time. If bike values went up as fast as the DJI a GT750 would sell for $33.800. Or maybe it's more appropriate to suggest that a bike filling that same or equivalent market position should sell at that price.

That tells me more about the over inflation of the share market than it does about much else and I'm not sure this thread is the right place to chase the rabbit down that particular rabbit hole

So I went back and used CPI and according to http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl? ... year2=2014" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, $1800 in 1975 is $8.572 in current dollars. Phew. That's a bit more reasonable. :?
