77 GT500 or 77 GT550 Forks - How to tell?

I'm doing a full scale rebuld of a basket case GT500. I just found that the front caliper is the ASCO flavour (i.e. 77 GT550). Now I'm questioning the forks - is there an easy way to tell the difference from GT500 to GT550 forks? From what I can by overall shape/bolts they look pretty similar, but parts lists are giving me different #s, even for oil seals. Forks are off bike so if there are unloaded length specs or something of the sort to tell the difference, I'm fine with that.

Also wheel & brake disk - I would assume that the fork decision will lead me down the right path for disk & wheel, but again, is there an easy way to tell?

I'm guessing it was just caliper swap, but I want to be sure before I commit to buying parts (I don't have the money to waste on the wrong parts)!

Fork diameter? What are the 500 forks?

From what I have read, both are 35mm dia - so no help on that front...

Are they the same length? Don't take my word for it, but I have a feeling the 550s are a little longer.

I read that the 550's are a little longer, but without the two to compare I need a length # for one or the other against which to compare.

At a minimum - can anyone confirm if the oil seals are interchangeable?

Navigate to year then to GT550 and to GT550. Fork designs look completely different and the fork seals are not the same part number.

Cheers,
