Suzuki 2 Strokes

The placard is missing from the steering head of my GT750L and I would like to know if the month of manufacture can be determined from the frame's serial number, which is: GT750-47849




Any educated guesses on when this thing was made?

There is of course the 'Field Guide to the GT750' reference eh ? I'd guess yours to be early 1974 year production as it is late in the production run for 'L'.

Hi,from Sydney,my "A" model is Australian compliant,it has a alloy plate on the head stock with a build date of November 1975,so each year the bike & I have a birthday together
What I can tell you about your "L" is that it's one of 12,576 "L" models that were made !not a big production run,14,010 for the "A" model,& 21,252 for the "J"
The "L" has a few little differences to other models,the way the front mudguard stays are attached,clamps screwed over the top,& not from the bottom,Radiator Crash Bar has a different radius where it bends on the top rail & the chrome ring at the top of the fork legs....

Interestingly, I just sold the bike to a person in Australia through an ebay auction who is trying to get the vehicle import formalities taken care of, and he needs to know the month of manufacture in order to bring the bike in to the country. I wasn't even aware that the placard was missing, and am concerned that we may have to cancel the deal if the month of manugacture cannot be established to the satisfaction of Australian customs.

This would not be a problem in the U.S. if it was a domestic sale, because all that is needed is the VIN and serial number from the bike, and a clear title of course.

Very strange indeed...I know about all the paper work & having a clear title here is very important,if you haven't got these things right,then the vehicle can not be registered anywhere in Australia full stop !!! It instantly becomes a Museum Attraction or can only be used as a "Static Display" item !!! But as for the month being important to meet Aust Design Rules,is a little over the top ?
My bike has the plate because it was an Australian delivered model & has everything on the plate,frame number, "date 11/75",frame number, etc frame number also stamped to right hand side of headstock ?
I have friends with US Imported Moto Guzzi's,will speak to them & see whether they had any trouble with Australian Customs....

Hmmmm. I sold my GT750B to a lad on Australia. All he needed was the engine number and of course the title. No mention was ever made about the date of manufacture. Deal went without a hitch.
Mine was missing the factory placard as well. Got lost when I had the frame powder coated.

If something has changed and having the label on a 30+ year old vehicle has become important, then I suppose two options present themselves:

• - drop labels@tylertech.com.au an email and see if he still has any of the US style GT750 VIN labels available - I wrote about them at this link. You just stamp your own information on the label.

• - drop this fellow an email jrure@aol.com, provide him with the date you'd like to use and the VIN of your machine and he will make one for you (specify that you need it for a GT750 as the weight is different from the GT500 I had done). I wrote about that at this link.

I just wish that someone in the states had had enough interest to buy the thing, It's not like I was asking too much for it, heck, as it is, I'm losing about $1000 on the deal just to clear it out of the garage. International selling and shipping is a big pain in the ass, and getting worse all the time. If I could get him to do it, I'd just refund his deposit and try again to sell it within the U.S.

Wait for him to send you a check for twice the auction price, and for you to forward half of it to his shipper.

I guess I got lucky. Buyer took care of everything. I didn't have to lift a finger except to help load in the transporter truck that the buyer sent to my house. From here it went to California. got placed in one of those big steel boxes and loaded on a ship.

When I sold my last GT750 on ebay around 2003 or 04, the buyer was in Japan, and had a rep in the states who made the all the payment, pickup, and shipping arrangements. The whole tranaction went like clockwork, and the bike went from our driveway, to Arizona, then on to Japan.
