GT750J Stiff first gear

Hi all, I have a 1972 GT750J which runs faultlessly in all respects bar one.
Getting it into first gear requires a proper stab on the gear lever, unlike my 750B which just needs a gentle press.
A mate suggested removing the neutral detente plunger and fitting a spacer washer so it wasn't pressing quite so hard into the selector drum.
I tried that and for the first couple of times it was way better, but now it's getting back to the way it was previously and it spoils a great bike.
I had thought about a lighter weight spring in the neutral detente, but before I start down that road I thought I'd ask if anyone has had a similar problem and if they managed to fix it.
Thanks..........Mick..........kettle738
