Are all the years of GT550 exhausts the same?

Post by bobotech »

I need to replace my right side lower middle cylinder muffler/pipe. My baffle blew out and the muffler is rotted so the mounting portion for the baffle also blew out. I'm just wondering if any GT550 lower right side muffler can work or does it have to be a 75-77 or something?

The 550's were notorious for the baffle plates rotting out. That leaves you with no inner support for the front of the baffle. But to answer your question .............
The 72 and 73 had a different rear mounting point than the 74 - 77. So if you get an early one, you will need to cut off the mounting tab and weld on a new one. IIRC, the difference is about an inch and a quarter. If you can find a 74 - 77, no mods are necessary.
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.

Hi
I've got a 1974 Gt550 that needed a exhaust. Purchased a 1973 and exhaust was a direct match. Maybe the 73 was a late model but anyway I did not have to alter it.
