Air Filter K&N for GT 750?

Post by barko1 »

Anyone use K&N filters on the buffalo? I imagine I'll have to replace what I have on the old heap I picked up and these happen to be on sale at Bike Bandit and look good. Generally I'm not a big fan of K&N as they probably let more stuff in but for the limited miles and no off roading the buffalo will ever get I don't think it would matter at all.

My tuppence worth ? Stock air box and filter is best - minimum risk of ventilated piston. 8)

Probably a good idea. I haven't been messing with older 2 strokes until now. Keep her stock!

Agreed....that's why I'm desperately seeking a '74--> stock GT750 airbox. I don't like the look or sound of 'pods', but original owner of this bike tossed it in the skip :(.

Not sure if it matters to you, but I suppose you know that the '74 style airbox and covers was specific to that year ? I show a photo of the '74 covers on this page. Its only of interest if you're trying to keep it all original - the later style will fit if you can't find one.

Oh, yes, I have two '74 bikes, one with original airbox, one with no airbox. This second one is for the hondazooki so any for the later carbs is good with me. I have a '72 box in a parts bike but that doesn't fit well with the later carbs.

I've done a few thousand km. with K&N pods on my GT 750 without any holes in the pistons. One pistonskirt has disintegrated though but I don't think that was because of the pods.

With VM carburettors I suspect it is less an issue (once you figure out how to support the carbs), but for the CV style it can be. There have been a couple of good threads on this topic elsewhere - do a search at the Smokerider board or go to this link if you already have an account. And as with anything else you read on the internet - caveat emptor ! 8)
