Confused in WV???

Post by jkevinlilly »

No, this isn't a misplaced "Dear Abby" post, but I figured the subject line would catch attention.

Mid October 2010 the bike, a 74 GT750, ran fine. A couple weeks ago I hit the starter button, engine turned over twice without hitting, then just the starter spun after that. Pulled the starter clutch today and the shear pin, (3mm woodruff key) was sheared. Replaced the key and reasembled. Now the engine turns over fine with the starter, but will not hit a lick. Air filter is not dirty. Pulled the spark plugs, all are wet with gas. Put the spark plug in the the sparkplug wire, ground it against the engine, get a stong spark. Using neutronics electronic ignition. When I took the timing plate off I marked it's position and re-installed it exactly as it came off.

Sooooo, I have air, gas, and spark, so theoretically the engine should run, if the timing is right. Since the timing is electronic there are no adjustments. Am I overlooking something simple here???

Suggestions would be appreciated.

It's flooded. The trick is to open the throttle all the way and turn it over until it fires. That way, gas velocity through the carbs is low so it picks up little to no fuel but allows lots of air in.

I would agree with TZ.....might even be worth taking out all the plugs and spinning it over a bit to clear the cylinders.

Sometimes they flood when sitting for a long time and it will shear the key when it locks up with a cylinder full of fuel, mine has done it as well. Take the plugs out and kick it hard, put in new plugs and run it hard if it starts.
