GT500???

Post by johnakay »

should I fail in getting my old bike back and decide to buy a GT500.
its seems that these are in better condition and cheaper than the T500.
and has a larger tank.

what would it take to bring the BHP up to say 50 from 44.
exchanging the barrels/pistons off a T500.
as I understand it it the m models had the same carbs but the earliers ones?
were this different to the later models?
the J model that I had the carbs were almost right up to the engine,
the later had a longer rubber neck.

this bike will be used so I don't want to phaf on to keep it running.
in others words fettling to keep her going.

on my last T500 I had a couple of teething problems.
1st it wasn't charging the battery, by the time I got it sorted I had them made my mind up to sell it.
the other was that it would only tick over on the left cylinder but once I got going the other would fire up.
I never did find out what cause it.

I'm asking this question as I'm torn between buying an old two stroke and the kawasaki w650.
what I do know the prices will increase as they are now on the two strokes.

the w650 is similar in riding etc and a little more power.
I'm not after top speed just a little more low down grunt.

so any idea's or info would be nice

As you know John, the GT500 has that ever so unfortunately named PEI (Pointless Electronic Ignition) system which Robert has reverse engineered. It can evidently be a bit of a pain - I will be finding out first hand in a few weeks as I try to get mine started. Other than that, the engine was a solid design although down on power from the 1975 and earlier models. Certainly much more reasonably priced than the GT750 in the UK. Baz has one he will be selling shortly (check the photos on his site), but it will be at least £5K or higher I would think.

As it happened, last Friday I took my 380 out was eating a burger. A fellow rode up on a W650, really snappy looking bike, I had not known they existed at all! :wth: I will always want at least one Suzuki 2-stroke in my garage, but if the W650 interests you, I think you would like it.

gobble way to much juice. price of petrol here is ridiculously high.
also I no longer earn a big wage any more, sort of semi retired now.
but I'm happy with what I get.

like Ian said cost to much.
and for that kind of money I'd rather buy a new bike.
all bike's are only worth what customers are willing to pay for.
and I'm not a believer in paying high sums in what is basically an old bike whether restored or not.

there are loads of modern and better bikes for less than the kind of money some folks are asking for these old two strokes.
but thats just my opinion.

my friend had one.
and he has/had more bikes than I've had hot dinners.
its the only one he would buy again and that's unusual for him to say that.
he always said he would never buy any of the same bikes again but only that one.
so it must be good.
if I do decide to get one, I'd have it respray in the colour of my choice.
here's some pictures and comparison to the Triumph bonneville.

I really like the W650!!! Looks like a Triumph with the Japanese reliability. As far as the GT500 ignition goes, I can only say from my experience, the coils on the stator gave me some trouble as there is not much to solder to when replacing them. Have to give them a good coat of epoxy so the connections won't vibrate off. So far have about a year and a half on the present pair. I have four built up and tested CDI boxes, so a spare on board can be had for a little extra piece of mind......
