can anyone tell me if a GT500 will drop in place of a T500 motor? if not what are some changes that will need to be made to make it work?

That shouldn't be a problem. The crankshafts are different, the ignition is obviously different and depending on which model of T500 you are talking about the carburettors, clutch and few other bits are different, but the frames were all pretty much the same.

It will drop right in BUT you will also have to change out the electrics, ignition, wiring harness.
The T500 has points and can NOT run with out the battery, the GT has CDI pointless and CAN run without Batt. Check out the links page, they have the wiring diagram for both of them so you can see the difference. Dofin
