hi all ,i had to replace the front harness on my 73 buffalo,
i had one that i got earlier but its from a later model.
almost everything is working but i have.
#1. a single brown female bullet from the harness,
#2. a male six connection block from the harness.
#3. a female nine conection block(uses only7 wires from the tacho).
#4. a female three connector (2 wires black/white trace and green/black trace)
#5. a female three connector (2 wires white and red/grey trace)
#6. the front brake swith lamp wire bullet style (black/white and orange)
now i have the nineway block conector from the old harness i am asumeing that goes to the tacho and i need to get a sixway female conector and wire it to match the new harness.
i was expecting to have a couple of spare conections as the 73 does not have the gear poss indicator.
please be gentle as i am in electrical kindergarden
thanks mark.

Mark, why not contact Anthony at Oregon motorcycle and buy some connector kits and the crimper from him and make up the connectors you need to convert it over.
The 72 and 73 did not use a lot of those style connectors fully for the instrumentation, they were still on the bullet style in some areas, but you can update it as needed.
Do you have a harness diagram showing you the colours and their specific circuits at the H.L junction??? if not you will need that for starters for both the 73 and later models from 74 on.
For example the 72 and 73 used separate bullets for the gauge bulb wiring, while the harness you have now has the blueish coloured three pin socket for those.

Gear position light is a whole complete extra add on harness that goes back around the battery and down the left side to get to the sprocket area. It's not integrated into the main loom.

Actually, of recent Oregon has way better prices than V.C and a bonus is that you can also buy one side of a connector or single male and female connectors from Anthony where as with V.C you cannot.
Also of note is V.C is now using a different style of wide blade connector block that does not match with the original ones found on the bike.
Thats correct Richard, a long wiring loom with the six pin connectors on each end of it is for the gear indicator running down the frame to the left side so he does not need to worry about that part.

If I recall right, the later model gear position harness actualy had 7 wires. Six went to a cluster connector and the seventh wire (blue) had a male bullet connector. It's the neutral light wire. Won't he need that?

Yes Coyote you are correct on that gear indicator harness, its a six pin setup with the neutral separate as a blue wire on bullets. Since hes got the back portion of the old harness he only needs to run the extra short piece up to the tach gauge, removed from his old harness.

Well......let's see if I've got this right.......this SHOULD be the left hand side of the 72/73 wiring diagram from the FSM.....

OK....a little overlap between the pages and too much whitespace, but eminently usable, IMO.
Enjoy !!!

Mark those six wires you're wondering about are for the three warning lamps going to your tachometer. Suzuki often ran out of the correct colours and used 'other colours' with little label tags that usually fell off over time.
Since it was a socket and being the only six, you could not connect it wrong unless it got cut off making things a little difficult.
The yellow and black with white trace is high beam.
The green and solid back is indicators
The blue and orange is the neutral
You dont have the black or the orange colour correctly marked, so you will have to test the two mismatched colours for correct location. The one of those two mismatched colours with your meter connected giving 12 volt power at 'switch on' to ground will be the equivalent to orange. The other left over will be the black wire to go with the green for indicators.
Test it and see first, then make your final connections after.
Let us know how you make out.
