Would you guys buy a bike with no title and the owner has no bill of sale? It's a '70. Complete with tank rack. Bike looks pristine (in pictures) and all original, except it has a set of chambers on it. Hasn't been started in years, and the owner claims he's never even tried to kick it over. Wants $1k for it. I'm sure I could ebay it for twice that much, but the possibility of it being stolen is there.

Maybe get the Vin# and run them to see if they are clear ?

Good ideas. When he told me he'd prefer to sell it with no bill of sale to me, my BS detector started ringing.

I'd make out a bill of sale and just have him sign it.
I've also 'sold' a bike to a friend and had the friend sell it back to me with a bill of sale. (MN seems to be fairly lax on that stuff)
How many miles does it have on it? (I'm always leery of easy money too)
Good luck - Arne

Already told him that's the only way I'd buy it.

Hey, it's green, just like mine! You *have* to buy it!
Assuming it's not stolen that is. I'd run the numbers at your local police office before handing over the cash. If it's hot they'll take it away. Better his money lost than yours.

I think the likelihood that it's stolen is slim. If you have a friend in Alabama or Georgia, a title is easy to get. I've done it several times.
That bike appears to be a steal at 1K.

Stu,
Coyote has used out of state license services like Tecdiver70 lists to license a bike without a title, you might check with him about it.
Have a police friend run the vin number to check for it being stolen, if there is a report in the system, it should show up. If where you are is like it is here, there is no reason to even check with DMV for info. Their computer system probubly will not take it due to not enough numbers in the vin number itself for the computer to consider it a valid number.

I used the Staab Agency in Maine. The process was painless and only took about a week - including mail time. Cost was around $130.
