Alternator output?

I'm trying to adapt a modern H4 headlight bulb to the original headlight with the flat bottom.
Two questions, do you guys think it can handle the extra heat and is there enough
-room to move- in the alternators output to accommodate the extra draw from the H4 bulb?
Thanks,
Chris

chris,
there are a couple of things that you can do to accomodate a high output headlight.
switching your other bulbs to l.e.d.s is the easiest way to reduce the overall draw on the charging system. watch the princess auto flyers for the $2.99 1157's.
if you are sitting at a stop with your hi beam, brakes and signals on you will be pulling a lot of watts.
something between 80 and 130 watts. not to mention the draw of the mechanical flasher and the regulator itself
if you're going to an h4 socket you can put a low budget auto h.i.d. setup from ebay on. they only draw 35 watts, like a stock hi beam.

Or you can just put in the 35W/35W version of the H4 bulb......
a little harder to find but it IS available.

Chris,
The stock alternator will eventually suck your battery dry of charge running a standard 55W/60 H4. You can do a couple of things -
Snag an HID conversion for @ $40-$50 off of Ebay like this:

OR you can send your alternator out to be rewound:

Last time I asked he was getting about $180 to rewind a T500 alternator to give enough juice to run a 55W/60 bulb and keep the battery charged.
OR you can step up to a powerdynamo generator:
http://www.powerdynamo.biz/eng/systems/ ... 61main.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
These are very well made and I know a few folks that use and like them. With shipping to the USA, you're looking at about $500.
So there's three options. Fang (who used to post a lot on this board when he had a T350) did the HID conversion on an RD350 and said it gave plenty of light. I would avoid switching the taillight to an LED bulb. In my opinion the taillight on a T500 is small enough (even the double bubble on a '75) without reducing the output further with an LED.

Just as a reference point, Kevin rewound a Hitachi low speed coil for one of our TZ250s (sold) and he did a great job. Nice fat blue spark at lower revs than stock.

My T350J model runs a 55/60 H4 bulb without any trouble while using standard bulbs everywhere else.
The wiring is standard without the green to red/green swap for extra output and there are no problems charging the battery while riding.
Considering the meagre alternator output from the T350 I would have expected the 500 to also cope with a 55/60 H4.
