Fuel Filler Cap Compatibility

Decided I'd replace the filler cap on the T500 as the chromework really lets it down, and re-chroming looks to be a bit of a challenge as a fair bit of dismantling would be necessary.

Just spotted this ad on Ebay - could any of you with experience of such matters comment on the compatibility with the T500M please?

According to Alpha sports it’s correct for a T500M 1975 model. See site. I check parts on their site by selecting the part on the part number and under you can see if it’s available and the part number update. Take a look

Digger, the cap is easily disassembled for re chrome. Remove the cap and study it carefully. The main piece in the center is held in place by 3 prongs. The prongs are captured by the slight taper in the cap. Using a screwdriver, you simply pop that part out. That just leaves you with the latch mechanism. Just inside the shell you will find a slip ring on both sides. Remove those slip rings and the latch / lock pulls out from each side, leaving you with an empty shell. Pay attention to how the latch mechanism assembles as you remove it. After chroming, reverse assemble. Photos along the way always help jog your memory if the chromer takes too long.

Thanks a million for that .... I'll strip it down & go the chroming route then.

Always nice not to have to carry two different keys.

(Although I can't help thinking of the Haynes Manual interpretation when I read your re-assurances  )

Perhaps this will help - its from an early Buffalo, but should be similar to what you have. The half clips Coyote mentions are marked as 5. Item 8 is the cap that I sent out to be re-chromed, and after it came back I just reassembled the rest. The seal on the stopper/retainer item 7 is still available from Suzuki. 8)
