Old vs. New Starter Clutch

It appears that the starter clutch is gone in my 1974 GT550. When I hit the starter button, it spins (I can hear that), but doesn't crank the engine. From what I'm reading it means that the dreaded "early style" starter clutch has died.

My question: What is involved with putting the later model starter clutch into my bike? Will I have to change just the clutch assembly, or do I have to do the starter, gears, etc, etc?

The starter clutch exploded in my 75 GT550. I was lucky enough to find the complete assembly on ebay for $39 BIN. You have to have the entire assembly to make it work for you. It takes a different clutch assembly entirely. Only the clutch plates are interchangable.

So, I just need the assembly, and not all the other gears and a new starter motor.

That's good. I just need to know what to keep my eyes open for on the auction sites.

New starter clutch assy. will run about $250.00, a used clutch assy., around $100.00 (Make sure it's off of a 1976 or 1977 and comes complete with the starter gear, bearings, spacer and washer! You have to install it as an assembly.) Or do what I did and kick her over for almost 30 years!! Who needs an electric start!! My starter clutch exploded in 1976 and I never replaced it until 2005!

This is what you need. I upgraded this summer on my 1975 550. You may be able to find an assembly if you are patient on ebay.

Had the same problem - the old one is on the left, and on the right is what its supposed to look like !



This is the two types side by side - the new style as described in the GT-25 service bulletin mentioned above is on the left and the style it replaced is on the right.
