whats up guys. im new here and a few months ago picked up a '76 gt550 for a cool $400. It ran like a dream for a month and then slowly to not start and or bog out as it was on. I ordered a carb rebuild kit after i took the carbs off and noticed that the center carb had no jet in it. So I replaced all that along with K&N pod filters and the beast wont even start now. Spraying starting fluid in the filters will make it run until that dies off, but other then that its a no go. Anyone have and suggestions, I checked my plugs and they were clean and getting spark. Any help is appreched

hey hombre,
do you have the proper fuel cap on there. i can't tell in the pic.
you have a fuel delivery problem so check for decent flow out of the petcock. if your cap is not vented there will be no flow.
if there is flow, then stuck/ misadjusted floats.
i have recently put my airbox back on with pods in place of the stockers. i find it is more ridable with the common plenum and intake runners.
alot less intake noise as well.

Welcome to the board, from your observation of how the starting fluid runs the engine till the it dies means, its not getting fuel. I suggest you start at the tanks internal cleanliness and petcocks filters etc then move onto stripping the carbs, again. For any old carbs its worth getting a ultrasonic cleaner from Harbor Freight to make sure all the orifices are perfectly clear. These things are invaluable for any motorcyclists or mechanic, and no i do not work for Harbor Freight,LOLOL.

No haha that is not a stock cap. My gas cap broke and I work at lowes and saw these plumbing test plug that fit perfect for only $5. My tank was dirty and I cleaned it out and have decent flow out of the petcock, well maybe decent I'm not actually sure what's decent an what's not haha. I'll go check that out and try and report back. Thanks for the help guys.

If I'm reading this right, are you saying you've put a plumbing plug in the filler cap?

If you're not pulling our collective plonkers with that one, then there's your answer. For fuel to run out of the tank, air must be allowed to flow in. As soon as sufficient fuel has been used to create a vacuum in the tank, the flow stops. That's one of the first things I learned at 12 years old with my first bike....

that's why i asked hombre the first time around. it's amazing what lessons you learn after pushing your bike home.
collective plonkers. that will increase the size of my plonker if i'm allowed to use the average. :wth:

I took off that plumbing piece I was using as a cap and used the broken stock one with a few fixes and tried it out. The bike started right up and was running strong. Thanks for the advice guys

Check the vacume line to the petcock. If it's cracked or come off at the petcock or carbs it wont open the diaphram and will starve the fuel.
